“Fucking useless book!” There was the sound of tearing paper and a portion of Taming for Dummies was thrown to the ground. Reshmi looked over at Vince, sitting against a rock, scowling at the much lighter book in his hand. “There is a full chapter devoted to taming. Not tips for specific breeds or types mind you, that's the next chapter. No, it tells you exactly what you need to do to tame a fucking pokegirl! Who the hell becomes a tamer and doesn't know how to fucking TAME?!”

Tamer and harem were setting up camp for the evening. Ava was off a ways gathering firewood while Reshmi was picking up around the sight for when they set up the tent later. Reshmi hesitantly picked up the discarded portion of the book. “What were you looking for? I could go through it while we're walking if it'd help.”

“Nah. I'm done with that thing. I'll figure this shit out on my own.” Vince had been hoping that the self proclaimed guidebook for beginning tamers would have some insight on how to stop the squabbling between the two members of his harem. Reshmi didn't mean to cause any problems, but her introduction meant that Ava no longer had Vince to herself, and she held that against the spinnertit. It might have helped the issue if Reshmi were willing to tame with her harem sister. Vince had thought Ava sounded generally enthusiastic about having a female partner again, but Reshmi didn't seem comfortable at all with the idea, and Vince didn't feel right ordering her to.

So Vince was stuck with a Combusticunt that seemed more determined to live up to her breeds reputation with each passing day and a recent love-ball victim that was still coming to terms with her new life as a Spinnertit. Neither really seemed like alpha material, and the only advice his copy of taming for dummies offered for running a smooth harem was to select a capable alpha.

Vince had a feeling that if he could get Reshmi open to the idea of taming with Ava, the Combusticunt would ease up on the Spinnertit in return. If the bond between them was strong enough, Vince could probably just tell Reshmi to do it, but he wasn't sure if it had reached that point with only one taming. He decided the next best thing to do was to simply try to talk her into it. He motioned to the Spinnertit with his hand. “Hey Reshmi, come over here for a second. I wanna talk.” The Spinnertit settled down next to him against the rock, leaning into him as he put an arm around her. “Sorry Ava's being such a bitch towards you. I'm not sure what's gotten into her.”

Reshmi shook her head, a little bit of her hair getting in Vince's face as she did. “No, it's not that bad. I'm sure she just needs to get used to me being here.”

“Yeah, you're probably right. You know, it'd probably help you two get along if you were to tame her. I'm pretty sure she's got a thing for you.” Vince gave the spider pokegirl a wink and a nudge.

Reshmi shifted a little. “It's just that, I grew up with everyone telling me how important it was that I find a man to have kids with. That it wouldn't be right to be with another girl because I was too important. I know that's not the case now, but... it's just kind of stuck.”

“Who gives a fuck what other people think? I think it'd be awesome if you and Ava tamed each other, and eventually you may need to just to help me out when I get a full harem. I do want to be able to get other things done during the day than fuck.”

“You would?” Reshmi looked to be lost in thought for a minute, finally breaking her silence with a sigh. “To be honest, being with another girl, it's something I've been really curious about, since a couple weeks ago anyway. I seem to find girls in general more attractive. Or at least, part of me thinks it makes sense to have sex with them...” The Spinnertit's face turned a little pink as she interrupted herself with a light giggle. “Ava has a really nice ass.”

Vince let out a chuckle. He couldn't argue with that. “You know, she'd probably like it, if you didn't tame her, if you just snuggled together. She likes to cuddle up to anyone that's got a warm body, you might even be able to sneak in a feel. Trust me, it'd be worth it.” Vince started laughing as Reshmi's blush deepened before she started laughing with him.

“Still, it's a little weird to think that maybe it's only because I'm a pokegirl now that I'm thinking this way. It'd be nice to know if that's who I really was, not just a part of what I am now. I kinda feel the same way about taming in general. I mean, I enjoyed it, being with you. I just don't like needing it.”

Vince shrugged and pulled the spinnertit onto his lap. “You'll get used to it. There really isn't a way to go back to what you were, so there's really no choice but to get used to it. I went through the same kind of thing when all my traits kicked in. Especially figuring out that I needed tamed more frequently than you and Ava put together.”

“Huh?” Reshmi scooted around so she could turn to look at him completely. Realization suddenly dawned on her face, and she jumped up away from where they'd been sitting. “Omigosh-you-have-tamer's-disease!” She looked about ready to run.

“And you have something even worse. At least I won't ever wind up killing and eating someone if I don't get sex. You're thinking too much like a human still. And a fucking 'clean' on top of that.” Reshmi wilted under the combined assault of his words and glare, her eyes starting to sparkle even more than usual as they watered up. Vince stood up slowly and reigned in on his anger, speaking lower and calmer. “Hey. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say it like that. It's just, you get that same reaction every time for three years of your life for something you can't help and well... It gets to you, you know.”

Both were quiet for a moment before Reshmi timidly spoke up. “What's a clean?”

“Oh, that's what I call people that look at others with obvious blood traits like they're something the 'clean' stepped in. Like a person's instantly worth less because they've got a tail, or different ears, or...”

“Or pink hair?” Vince gritted his teeth, and then nodded once. Thankfully, Reshmi decided to change the topic. “You know, I've never really known anyone with a blood curse. At least not very well. What all do you have?”

Vince smirked as he flipped out his pokedex and brought up his tamer's page. He handed it over to the Spinnertit as he listed them off from memory. “Well, I've got Toughness, Endurance, Recovery, Strength, and Boost for gifts, Tamer's Disease and Rebel for curses,” he pointed up to his pink hair, “and this I can thank Pokeboy phase 1 for.” He ended with a slight growl.

Reshmi's eyes got big as he and she both went over the list. “That many? How strong are you? Can you beat a pokegirl?” That got a laugh out of Vince.

“Ha. Yeah, some. I've beaten quite a few Ingenue before, and I could probably beat you in a fight if you didn't use your poisons. But back when these all started popping up, my mom set me up to fight a bunch of Tyamazons, just to hammer in the point that even a low tier evolution would hand me my ass even while holding back so they didn't outright kill me.”

“Wait... I have poisons?” Reshmi went from looking at him to pointing the 'dex at herself and pressing the scan button.

Ava came back from gathering firewood as Reshmi was scanning through the article on herself. “What is she doing with your pokedex?”

“I think she's reading up about her breed. I guess she didn't know she had poisons.”

Ava let out a 'humph' of air. “I'm not surprised, she did get beat by a Titmouse today.”

Vince leveled a look at his Combusticunt. “She didn't lose, she just got a bad bite from one. You should stop being so mean to the 'girl that cooks dinner for you. Thousand know neither of us can make a decent meal.” Vince took some firewood and arranged them to make a cooking fire, one of the few useful things explained in the part of Taming for Dummies he'd keep. The more useless portions were already in the fire pit they'd dug.

Ava bent down to light the paper and wood, speaking really quiet as her and Vince's heads were close together. “Hey. I want to learn to read.”

“Now? Why? You didn't want to learn a year back when all those parity nuts were running around with the T2s for it.”

“Reshmi can read.” Vince gave her a flat look.

“Fine, but it's going to take a while. I'll see about getting you some books or something to start with. I don't think the pokedex would work too well, the letters are too small.”

Ava cocked her head to the side. “What's a letter?”

Vince stared at his Combusticunt in disbelief for a second before he could wrap his head around the possibility that she had never been introduced to the concept of an alphabet. “Letters of the alphabet. They're symbols that you group together to make words.” The explanation didn't help much, Ava still had the same puzzled look on her face, though she cocked her head towards the other shoulder. “This is definitely going to take a while...”

The next morning saw them walking along a path to one of the little villages carved out of the wilderness. Vince wasn't even sure what the name of it was, and he didn't plan on stopping there anyway.

Vince had Reshmi put up in her ball. The lung problems universal to her breed meant that if she stayed out all the time, they'd have to take more frequent breaks. Vince was lost in thought about how stupid of a genius Sukebe must have been to allow a problem like that to stay in one of his creations when an unknown snake pokegirl crossed the path in front of them. Vince had his 'dex and an empty pokeball off his belt and Ava got in a fighting stance when the girl put her hands up and spoke. “Wait! I'm with my tamer, I've got an ID chip. You try to catch me and you'll be committing theft.”

Vince and Ava froze for a moment, not expecting the pokegirl to speak, let alone with such authority. Vince blinked a few times and shook his head to snap himself out of it. He put the pokeball back in its holder, but kept out the pokedex to scan the girl. Before displaying her breed information, a small window popped up on the screen, notifying him that the scanner had picked up a signal from a chip and that she belonged to someone named Evan Thatcher. After closing the window, the article and picture for the Naga breed came on screen.

The Naga cocked her head to the side, listening to an earpiece Vince had just noticed. “Yeah, I'm ok, just stumbled across a tamer on the path.” She looked up at Vince again, “My master would like to know if you'd mind some company for the rest of your way. We really aren't headed anywhere specific so it doesn't really matter where you're headed. I think he just wants another human to talk to.” Vince gave a non-committal shrug. He really didn't care either way.

Evan Thatcher appeared to be around three years older than Vince. The most notable feature he had was dull purple colored hair and eyes. Standing next to him was a girl that looked maybe fourteen or fifteen. She gave a nod to the Naga as Vince and the snake pokegirl approached her master. Evan stuck out a hand in greeting. “Nice to meet you. My name's Evan Thatcher. Yours?”

“Vince.” Vince took out his pokedex and motioned towards Evan's other 'girl. “You mind?”

Evan chuckled. “As long as you don't challenge me for her.” The same warning about an ID chip popped up, but underneath it was the article on the Dracass breed. “Here, if you're curious I'll show you all my 'girls.” Evan held out his arm and clapped his other hand on the forearm. He then went about releasing three other girls. After the appearance of a Glace, a Sword Dancer, and a Boobleaf, a Rack dropped out of the sky and landed at the end of the line. “Alright, I've got my alpha, Sienna,” He gestured to the Dracass, “Violet,” the Naga, “Cyan,” the Glace, “Xanthe,” the Sword Dancer, “Rina,” the Boobleaf, “and Cam.” He finished with the Rack.

Vince was taken a little off guard first by the rather impressive harem Evan had and then that he introduced them by name. It wasn't really common practice here or any of the other leagues nearby, but Vince decided that he might as well introduce his two 'girls the same way. He let Reshmi out of her ball. “Alright, this is Ava, and the Spinnertit's Reshmi. Girls, this is Evan Thatcher.” Reshmi did a little bit of a curtsey along with a quick, 'nice to meet you.'

“Cam, back to overwatch. Cy, Vi, and Rina, return. Xanthe, you're out for this stretch.” Vince left both of his girls out, so the two made their way down the path, talking on the way. Reshmi gravitated towards the other six armed bug type, and the two of them had a hushed conversation. After about a quarter of an hour of walking, Evan jerked his head towards Reshmi. “So... is she the girl that was caught by those Team Machismo jerk-offs a while back?”

“Wait, how'd you hear about that?”

“I keep in touch with the agent who took care of that case, James Ewald. He was kinda like a mentor to me for a while.”

Vince could help but make a small noise of disgust at hearing the name. Evan caught it and gave him a questioning look. Vince explained, a little hostility carrying over through his voice, causing Evan's Dracass to narrow her eyes at him in distrust. “Sorry, not on the best terms with him. He's kind of a manipulative bastard.”

The tension between the two tamers and harems was shattered when Evan started laughing out loud. “Yeah, he really is. Man, you should have seen some of the stuff he put me through. Though a lot of it was for the best. I mean, I owe him for half of my harem pretty much, and my life a few times. It's something you'll probably understand eventually. So not only do you have the loveball victim, you're that kid that wound up mixed up in his mess? Man, I've got to hear this now.” Reluctantly, Vince started telling the story of how he'd gotten Reshmi and become a tamer. After he was done, Evan shared some of his stories, and the two tamers continued like that until they stopped for lunch.

The day had been completely uneventful after lunch, all the way up to setting up camp for dinner. Vince and Evan had all of their girls who could cook collaborate, and using a little bit of their combined resources they had a fairly impressive spread. Everyone was settling down and passing out dishes when a deafening buzzing filled the air around them. Both tamers and their harems jumped to their feet.

“Cam, Sky! Girls, circle up! Vince, your 'girls fight for you!” The older tamer's harem went into action isntantly, the Rack vaulting into the sky and the other five spreading out around their tamer. Ava and Reshmi were slower to react, and barely were in position before the first of the swarm of Buzzbreasts were on them. The bee pokegirls paused for only a brief moment before raising their stingers in unison and swarming forward to attack.

Two of the approaching Buzzbreasts were frozen solid by an ice beam. Another one was heavily damaged by a barrage of embers from Ava. A Feather Shuriken attack from above peppered the densest portion of the swarm, though no more of the bug types went down before closing the distance on the tamers and their harems.

Vince had seen footage of feral battles, and had guided his girls in a small handful since leaving home, but none of them were like what broke out when the swarm collided with the two combined harems. He couldn't even shout orders effectively over the incessant droning of the Buzzbreasts' wings. Fortunately, Evan's harem seemed to be dealing with most of them, leaving five for Vince's party to contend with. It was still more than Vince would have liked to deal with. Two went for each of his pokegirls, while one headed straight for him.

Vince rolled out of the way of the first pass made by the Buzzbreast, avoiding her attempt at impaling him on her stinger. As it turned to make another charge, gun shots blasted throughout the clearing, and small bursts of fire peppered the bug 'girls' back, shredding her wings and dropping her to the ground. Vince quickly glanced to where the shots had come from, just in time to see Evan train his elemental pistol on another Buzzbreast and fire a second burst. Without a pokegirl specifically attacking him, Vince turned his attention to see how his 'girls were doing.

Ava was keeping the two Buzzbreasts at bay using her ignite attack while she peppered them with more embers. Reshmi on the other hand had taken a few hits, including one really nasty sting. She had herself backed against a tree. One of the Buzzbreasts was no longer flying. A few bloody marks around her neck and the sluggish way she was moving at least meant Reshmi wasn't the only one fighting off the effects of a poison sting. “Ava, help out Reshmi! Get the one that's still in the air!” Still engaged with her two Buzzbreasts, Ava launched another ember at the third, then ran in and delivered a kicking attack to knock the bee 'girl away from her harem sister.

A quick look at his Spinnertit and Vince decided that he had a better chance at finishing off the poisoned Buzzbreast than she did. Luckily, she was still moving to attack Reshmi, so Vince ran up behind the feral bug type and brought both his fists hammering down on the back of her skull. The blow sent the Buzzbreast's face to the dirt for a moment before she shakily got back to her feet. Vince hit the feral with a few more punches and avoided all of her attacks, but it didn't feel like he was doing enough to keep her down. Seeing her opponent turn to face Vince, her master, caused Reshmi to get her second wind though, and the Spinnertit grabbed the Buzzbreast from behind and dug into her with all six hands. The Buzzbreast went rigid, then fell to the ground in a fit of muscle spasms. Vince could see short, thin off-white tubes retracting under the tips of Reshmi's fingers.

The sounds of fighting had died down. Vince scanned the area. Most of Evan's girls were standing over top of multiple Buzzbreasts, some of the ferals moving, some of them clearly would never move again. He couldn't see Ava though.

“Vince! Hey! Over here! HURRY!” Vince quickly recalled Reshmi then ran towards Evan's voice, which was coming from the other side of some think undergrowth. Around the area was one charred corpse of a Buzzbreast and two that had been sliced open. Evan was kneeling with Xanthe watching over him, her swords put away with a worried look on her face. “Recall your girl, we can't treat this with a potion.” Vince rounded the bush to see Ava lying on the ground unmoving in a pool of blood.

“Is she...” Vince could form the words to continue.

“Not unless you don't recall her, Now.” Vince tore the Combusticunt's pokeball off his belt and let out a sigh of relief when the capture beam absorbed the critically wounded 'girl.

“What the hell happened?” Vince was still staring at the blood seeping into the ground.

“One of those Buzzbreast's stingers broke off inside her when she took it down, then the other two were ganging up on her before Xanthe finished them off.” Evan looked like he had more to say, but instead turned to his sword dancer. “Go get the heal box, and tell Sienna I want the campsite broken down and ready to move ASAP. Vince, while you run your girls through the PPHU, help me tag any survivors.”

“Sure, I've got a PPHU you can use too. It's strapped to my pack.”

“Good, Xanthe, get Vince's too.”

The two tamers set to work capturing the still living Buzzbreasts after Vince had put both of his girls into a healing cycle. It was very quiet as they worked, but Evan kept giving Vince a look he wasn't too fond of. “You got a problem?”

The other tamer shook his head as his pokeball bounced off another fallen Buzzbreast without activating. “Not personally, no, but if you want some advice, you need to work on managing more than one 'girl in a fight. Both of them needed more guidance in that fight, should you ever be in a situation where you have a full harem fighting, you'll lose. Unless you improve, you'd better hope that happens inside a ring.”

Vince watched as his latest Buzzbreast was taken by the capture beam. “When I want your advice I'll ask for it.”

“I figured you'd say that... Well, that's all of them. I'll have Xanthe teleport us to Mamlambo, I need to report this and if the hive around here is sending that many out aggresively, then it's not safe out here for travel.”

Everything that had managed to be set out before dinner had for the most part disappeared, all of Evan's harem were finishing up the packing. Vince went over to the two PPHUs and retrieved his two pokeballs from them. “Hey, aren't you going to heal your girls up?”

Evan shook his head. “Nah, none of them took much damage. They can wait till we're at the center for to be put through a healing cycle. Oh hey, you mind if we make a trade? A few of the Buzz'es you caught for this pair of plant type pokegirls I got earlier today. Honestly, I think they're too cute to be turned in for bounty points but I don't have the room in my harem.”

Vince considered the offer. He definitely wasn't keeping any of the Buzzbreasts, the breed was too mindless to be really useful. A plant type could cover a few of Ava's weaknesses nicely too. “Alright, we'll make the trade when we get to the pokecenter.”

Evan grinned and nodded. “Excellent. Well, come on, looks like Xanthe's about ready.”

-

Since dinner had been interrupted by the Buzzbreasts, they ate at the center's cafeteria, Evan's treat. The conversation over dinner drifted to Evan, and Vince was curious enough to ask, “So, with a harem like yours, what were you doing out there?”

Evan steepled his fingers and rested his chin on them. “Well... pretty much I'm in deep shit with the league, thanks to a major screw up of mine that got me discharged from the JILF. I need to bring in a ridiculous number of bounty points a year or else I'll lose my license and harem. I was lucky enough to have a hunter from Blue teach me the tricks of the trade, so to speak, so I go out for a few weeks at a time and just clear out as many ferals around the villages that I can. Usually pick up some rewards from the towns too, pretty rare that there isn't a problem feral or five at any point in time.”

“What'd you do? To get kicked out of the military that is?”

“I'd rather not say...”

“Oh. Must have sucked...”

Evan and Sienna shared a knowing smile, the significance completely lost to Vince. “No, it really turned out all right.”

Friday January 29th 302AS

8:52

Mamlambo, Jade Islands League

Vince woke up practically smothered under three different girls, with everyone on the bed naked and nothing besides the bottom sheet anywhere to be found. He couldn't get up without pushing someone out of the way, so he laid there and looked around as much as he could. Ava was of course snuggled right up next to him on the other side, and Reshmi seemed to be spooning the Combusticunt from behind, the majority of the Spinnertits arms wrapped around her harem sister. Whatever had happened, it seemed Reshmi had gotten over a little of her apprehension about being with other girls.

What had happened? Vince thought back. After taming Ava and laying on the bed with her for a while after, he had let out Reshmi and explained that he wanted them there just in case while he tamed the first plant type out of her feral state. She was a Flowergirl thought, so he wasn't expecting any problems. When he had released the pokegirl, he was proved pretty much correct. She seemed a little distracted looking around the room, but also seemed open to the idea of a taming.

So did Reshmi, which Vince thought was funny considering her usually reserved nature. Then he caught sight of something floating in the air right before the Flowergirl shook her head wildly, sending a billowing cloud of Lust Dust throughout the room. So that's what happened... Good thing I don't have any girls that need restraints...

Vince took this opportunity to look over the Flowergirl. She definitely wasn't bad. She was a bit shorter than Reshmi, though she had a much more luscious build. Her skin was a muted green color, her hair a more vibrant shade. The flowers in her hair were mostly a shade of light blue, and the tips of her hair were changing to a more yellow-ish hue. As he was looking at her, the Flowergirl's eyes fluttered open. She blinked a few times, then looked at him and smiled. Then her eyes went wide like she remembered something important and jumped out of the bed, calling out a distinct vocalization that made it sound like she was expecting an answer.

The noise woke up Vince's other two pokegirls, and as the three got up to watch the Flowergirl search the entire room, repeating the same call as she continued to not find whatever she was looking for. Vince had to grab hold of her as the plant type almost made her way out of a window. Reshmi picked up Vince's tamer's belt, removing the ball for the second pokegirl he had traded Evan for. The case was an odd color, but Vince figured it must have just been one from a different manufacturer. “Maybe she's looking for the other 'girl?” The Flowergirl wasn't struggling to get free from Vince, but when it became clear he wasn't going to let her go continue her search outside she let out one last, heartbroken call.

“Might as well see if that's what she wants. Ava, be ready in case the new girl is a threat.” Reshmi turned the pokeball around in her hand for a moment before hitting the release button. The 'girl that was released from within definitely wasn't a threat, she was pretty much a smaller version of the first Flowergirl. The pokekit squeaked out the same sound that the adult Flowergirl had been making, and upon seeing the 'kit and hearing her response the plant type pokegirl tore free from Vince's hold and embraced what must have be her child.

Vince could only stare dumbly as Reshmi let out a quiet, 'Aawww.' He had been hoping the second pokegirl would have been something better capable to fighting, and he would just put the Flowergirl up for trade or sale. Obviously, that wasn't going to happen.

-

Vince hated paperwork. Vince hated instructional videos. Vince had to sit through both thanks to the Flowergirl pokekit that had been dumped on him. Apparently Evan was authorized to carry pokekit balls, and the trade was completely legit, meaning Vince needed to be authorized to carry one pokekit ball now, along with owning one pokekit to go in it. And that's what he was really uncomfortable with.

Another tamer in the pokecenter decided that Vince would could use his advice. “Just dump the kit at a ranch and put the mom through a level five. She's a feral so you don't even need to worry about teaching her anything over again.”

Anger surged up inside Vince, for reasons he wasn't quite sure of. He definitely didn't want the 'kit. But seeing the way they held each other, the closeness between the mother and daughter, he felt like he had to make sure they stayed together. And the only way he could be sure of that was to keep both of them himself until he found someone he knew could be trusted to take care of both. “If I wanted advice I'd ask a Bunnygirl for it before you.”

“Hey, what the hell man? I was just telling you what I'd do, but obviously you've got so much pokegirl in you you think they're just as human as you are. Well, they're nothing like me which means you must be down at their level.”

Vince clenched his fist tight enough to drive his nails into his palm painfully. With a behavioral blood curse and a enhanced strength gift, Azar and Pritha had made sure he had the mental discipline to not lose his temper and start fights. “Well, whatever, pokefreak. If that's how you are do us humans a favor and get lost.”

Reshmi must have caught the movement before the asshole tamer did. She wrapped all six arms around Vince's right just as he started throwing it as a hook. The tamer just looked at the stopped attack and smirked. “No, let him finish that. Then I'll be justified when I break that arm and call the police.”

“Nothing you do would even make me break a sweat.”

“Really now?” The tamer pressed a button on his 'dex, activating the record function. “Why don't we make that an official challenge then? 500 credits to the winner. Since you've got about the combined firepower of a starter, we'll leave out the harems and just settle this between tamers.” The jackass waved over to another one that was sitting in the lounge, this one looked quite a bit older. He only shook his head as he came over to officiate.

“Damnit Mark, you get in another fight I'm finding another apprentice, I don't give a Titmouse's shit who your family is. Get your ass back to the shop and wait there 'till I'm done here.” The other tamer, apparently a tradesman, waited a second and no more before deciding that Mark was taking too long. With a quick shove to the chest, he barked out the orders again. “I said get your ass back to the shop and stay there until I find something actually useful for you to do!”

The tradesman turned to face Vince as Mark hurried out the door. “Sorry about his attitude. Still, it's a good thing your 'girl stopped that punch, Mark's quite the impressive martial artist.”

Vince snorted. “Is that so? Looked like a clean-blood wuss to me.”

“Clean? You mean no blood traits? Yeah. I'm guessing you've got some then. Maybe I should have let him fight you, you could have actually taught him a lesson.” The older tamer shrugged and then walked back over to lounge. “Anyways, I overheard your problem with the Flowergirls. Just because he's a loudmouth dumbass doesn't mean he's wrong. That is the easiest way to deal with it.”

Vince waited a few minutes so he wouldn't have a chance to run into Mark again, then headed outside to wander to the various pokegirl businesses of the city, muttering under his breath and kicking around a spray of gravel with each step.
