VerMuffEatin City, Eight years ago.

The sun shone brightly through the window as the teen cracked a bleary eye. As a general rule she hated waking up early and getting ready for school. Never the less the aroma of her mother’s delicious cooking called to her. A loud yawn followed by a slight curse passed her lips as she rolled out of bed. She made sure she had plenty of time to get ready, she needed it.

Slowly she made it to her full length mirror and let a single tear roll down her cheek. The changes were still happening. 'Why now, I made it five years and now it happens.' She thought sadly.

Taking the pencil and ruler from her desk she opened her closet door and marked her height. The teen was never tall to begin with but now she could clearly see that she had actually been getting shorter over the past few weeks. Her chest had gotten smaller too and her eyes were getting larger. Threshold was taking its sweet time to finish the job and while the process was physically painless the mental price she paid was excruciating. In the back of her mind she cursed whichever one of her ancestors was a pokégirl.

There was no time to dwell though; she needed to get ready for school. Makeup was a simple process considering she didn't wear much. Inserts in her shoes made up for the height difference and bra padding increased her visible bust size back to normal. It was late spring so sunglasses weren't too out of place. Her school uniform had already been presses the night before and in fifteen minutes she was ready to go.

Her father and brother were already at the breakfast table when she came down the stairs while her mother was just finishing cooking. Terrance, her younger brother, gave a slight wave and took another sip of his juice before looking down into one of his school books. The news played in the background as her father continued reading the morning paper and stirring his coffee.

The gruff older man ruffled the paper and took a sip of his coffee, never once looking up. "The Parity party is still gaining influence. Has it been so long that people forgot about Mao's rebellion? I mean I don't mean to sound prejudice..."

"But you're going to power though it anyway." The girl said under her breath, earning a raised eyebrow from both her father and brother.

"Pokégirls are never going to be equal. They're just vicious beast wreaking havoc across the league."

"Don't be like that Daniel." The mother said as she sat down a plate in front of him. "Pokégirls do a lot of good in the world."

"The only good they do is when they're fighting other pokégirls. Otherwise they just turn feral and become a menace."

"I thought that was just Menace pokégirls dad? The NurseJoys at the hospital seem pretty nice." Spoke Terrance before digging into his pancakes.

"Those are human made pokégirls son and even some of those cause problems."

The girl took a bite out of her toast and grumbled. "Last time I checked all pokégirls were manmade."

"I don't count mad scientist as men. Real men, like myself, are out there fighting ferals and trying to keep the world safe. Hell I was just a little bit older than you Clarissa when I joined the Hunters Guild. We fight hard and keep those monsters in line."

Clarissa felt like throwing up as she continued to listen to her father prattle on about keeping the world safe. Once she knew she was going to be one of the so called monsters she used her free time to study up on pokégirls breeds and politics outside class. To her the members of the Hunter's Guild were nothing more than a band of abusive thugs. She had always wondered how much about history was really accurate, remembering the saying that it was written by the victor.

Beth, her mother, took a seat at the table and poured a cup of coffee. "Your birthday is coming up tomorrow, was there anything particular you wanted?"

Clarissa couldn't answer the question honestly, otherwise she would be wishing for some way to reverse going through threshold. Some of her friends had "dropped out" of school because of changing into pokégirls and she was hoping of graduate before fate finished dealing its hand. She had checked her symptoms against the threshold registry and narrowed the field down to the Tarot breed. With any luck she could hide being a pokégirl for a while longer.

"I can't really think of anything right now."

"You won't be getting anything at all if you don't pass your training simulation young lady." Arnold said harshly from behind his paper.

"Always with the pep talks. Today is the final day and my team is firmly in the lead. There's even talk of us beating the reigning score leader."

Terrence got up and placed his dishes in the sink. "Didn't that guy do it solo?"

"Yeah, but I don't see how. He couldn't gain any allies and managed to crush the opposing forces one by one."

"You two better get going or you're going to be late for school." Smiled Beth. "Do your best dear."

The two kids picked up their packs and waved as they headed out the door. Daniel set his paper down and looked to his wife. "I swear there's something not right about her. She gets it from you?"

"Funny Dear, I don't recall anyone in my family being so stubborn. That comes from your side."

~~~~~
The walk to the academy wasn't a long one but being late was strictly frowned upon. The sun was particularly bright and the sky was clear just to make the black and yellow uniforms all the hotter. As they continued on their way more of their friends joined them. The school year was ending soon so all the students were in high spirits. Talks of how they were going to spend their summer vacation and the most recent pokégirl matches helped to pass the time along the way.
Their walk took them past the VerMuffEatin Gym. Soldiers and pokégirls could be seen running across the fields and doing training exercises as Drill Sergeants yell obscenities to motivate them. One man stood out in particular to Clarissa. He didn't look to be much older than they were and was sparing against a group of pokégirls. He appeared to be doing well but she knew they were taking it easy on him. A field of darkness formed around him and suddenly a girl went flying out with him following shortly after. She giggled lightly when he wobbled back to his feet then fell over.
Another fifteen minutes of walking and they stood at Buzz Academy. The school was well known for its strict classes and production of some of the best tamers the Indigo League had to offer. Retired military members made up the majority of the staff and there were a few pokégirl instructors as well. Clarissa was set to graduate this year but couldn't get excited about it considering her current situation. Because of the strict rules about pokégirls and education there weren't any pokégirl students. She was determined to get the best education she could, it would only help when she needed to join a harem.
The brother and sister parted ways in the hallway and started towards their respective classes. Clarissa stopped off at her locker and tossed her bag inside before retrieving her books.
"How's it going C.T.?" Spoke the taller girl from the locker next to hers. With black hair and sliver eyes the female had a handful of inches over Clarissa and a larger bust to go with it.
Clarissa favored her best friend with a smile then sighed. "Any day now Kel. Every morning it gets worse and worse. I'm not sure how long I can keep hiding it."
Kelly put an arm around her friends shoulder and gave her a slight hug. "Worse comes to worse you can come with me. My grades are crap despite your help and it looks like being a tamer is the only option I have left." She checked her watch and began to pull Clarissa along. "Let's go, I want to see you mop the floor with Sharp."
~~~~~

The education at Buzz Academy was orthodox for the most part. Children were given standard classes to start, then as their strengths and weaknesses were accessed they got placed in classes to hone the first and make them more proficient in the second. As years went by job training was assigned in conjunction with survival training, students needed to survive in the wilderness for two weeks on minimal supplies. Of course their instructors for survival training were all originally feral-born pokégirls who kept to the shadows as their students fumbled around in the woods.

The first half of their last year was meant to prepare them for whatever their chosen career path was. The second half was mostly exams along with refreshers on the hundreds of pokégirls they had learned about. But of all the exams the most feared was the optional, two month long, Strategic Conquer Simulator.

Developed by a group of military G-Poindexters, the SCS exam was a fully functional simulation of the entire world, was interconnected and administered simultaneously with other academies across the league. Each student was given a starting province then expected to expand their areas of control to neighboring provinces. They had to run their designated areas as true leaders; instating political policy's, forming a defense force or military, maintaining public order, dealing with ferals, and generally trying to survive. Allegiances could be formed by the students for trade and supplies but doing so meant they would divide the grade based on territory and the number of students in an allegiance. To pass, the students had to survive for two weeks at the bare minimum. Everything from weather patterns to natural disasters was programed into the simulation and pokégirls were no exception.

To earn a higher grade the student has to expand their territory and the only way to do that was to engage other territories in war. They would need to gather and train humans and pokégirls to fight for their side then use them in skirmishes against each other. Every conceivable attack and military strategy had been programmed into the systems and battles took place in real time. Units were controlled by AI by default but students were able to take over and issue specific commands when necessary.

Grades were not only based off how much territory the students held but the morale of their population and the tactics used during battle. A tyrannical dictator may hold a lot of land but if their people were starving and ferals overran their lands then it didn't count for much. The exam took place over two months and in the system equated to 200 years, more than enough time to see the effect they were having on the world. Though rare, any student who scored exceptionally high could be recommended to join the military as an officer. There had only been five cases of such a feat since the program started and that fact was kept a secret from the students taking the exam.

The students made their way into class and talked amongst themselves while they waited for their instructor. Clarissa had kept to herself with the exception of talking to Kelly. The soon to be tamer had already acquired her pokédex and was helping her ally to come up with a strategy to take over the remaining half off their continent.

Despite a rough start things had come together rather quickly for Clarissa. Her political stance was democratic pro-pokégirl rights and because of that she gained a massive population growth. Treaties with a few Elf colonies bolstered her capital defense and made it easier for her tamers to catch other pokégirls while pokéballs were still in development. Other students had attacked her but fell due to her fortifications then she retaliated and seized their capitals to gain control of their lands.

The process had been successful until she ran into Allen Sharp and his friends. Their group had banded together early and formed a military alliance. One by one they swept across the continent taking over pockets of land and expanding their influence. With four separate armies at their disposal it was only a matter of time before they came knocking on her doors. The initial skirmishes had diminished Clarissa's forces and cost her some land but allies emerged to back her up.

"So Clarissa, it's the last day. One giant battle to decide it all." Allen mocked from his desk. "I hope you're ready." Tall, blond, and good looking; Allen Sharp came from a prestigious military and anti pokégirl rights family. That of course did nothing to help his attitude, taking a dim view of pokégirls in general.

"You better believe she's ready. You don't stand a chance." Kelly shot back.

"What do you know; if it weren't for her we would have knocked you out by the first week."

"And yet you couldn't since her army was there. Maybe next time you should try acting like the prince you make yourself out to be."

"That's enough Kel, Allen's just upset that he's in second place." Clarissa laughed.

When the door opened all the students moved to their desk and waited silently for the instructor to enter. She was one of the pokégirl instructors, a Duelist of above average height and with a strong build. Once a military pokégirl, she now taught Strategic Thinking and Tactics. Her master, a retired Major, was the dean boys. Like all who attended or taught at Buzz Academy her uniform was perfectly pressed and her hair done to military regulations. She was a kind soul though strict when it came to her lessons and her presence commanded the respect of her students.

"Good morning class!"

"Good morning Miss. Tiffany!" The students spoke back firmly.

"Please be seated." She waited for the students to sit before turning on the holo-board and showing the current rankings. "Our academy is currently holding the lead over the other academies. This is mainly due to the efforts of Ms. Tanner and Mr. Sharp. While those you've allied yourselves with aren't completely dead weight you two have done the most to push your nations ahead, congratulations."

Kelly felt the need to put her head down on the desk but resisted. She knew the Duelist's statement was directed at her. "Just shoot me in the head why don't you." She whispered under her breath.

"What was that Ms. Ross?"

"Nothing Miss. Tiffany."

"You're a bright girl Ms. Ross, far brighter than your test scores dictate. You've chosen an important path to follow, school isn't everything to everyone but I wish you would have at least put more effort into it." She spoke; though her tone was firm her eyes were soft.

"My apologies Miss. Tiffany."

"Never mind that now. This is the final day of the SCS and while I would have loved it if our top scorers were attacking one of the other academies I know they are going to hash things out with each other first.”

Clarissa sat back with a smug smile on her face. “I don’t know Miss. Tiffany; if all goes according to plan I should have more than enough army left to harass the opposing schools.”

The Duelist favored Clarissa with a questioning look and crossed her arms. “Pride isn’t very becoming of a young lady such as yourself Ms. Tanner; you’ll be wise to remember that for the future. Never the less you may have a point. As you know your nations run themselves while you’re away from the academy and an interesting thing has occurred.” She went to the holo-board and began pulling up the movements of both nation armies since yesterday. “As you all can see here both of your armies have amassed and are preparing to fight it out to the last. Ms. Tanner’s politicians have been prodding at Mr. Sharp’s and an all-out war in the only action left. You two have an hour to prepare your battle strategies and the whole class will watch as one of you is ruined. Three days of simulation time will pass before the battle, use them wisely.”

Clarissa leaned forward and swallowed hard when she looked at the screen. Sharp’s army combine with that of his three allies was nearly four times the size of her own. The battlefield was just that, an opened field where escape from pokégirls would be impossible. Over 100,000 fighters would be amassed between both sides and while Kelly’s forces were on Clarissa's flank for back-up it didn’t look like they would get there in time.

Sharp let out a booming laugh when he saw the looks on both girls faces. Victory was pretty much guaranteed. “I think she’s going to need a lot more than three days Miss. Tiffany.”

A smirk appeared on the corner of the Duelist lips. “Very well then, Mr. Sharp has kindly decided to give his opposition two weeks to prepare for battle.”

“But I didn’t mean…”

“How gracious of such a fine young gentle man.” She intervened to cut short his whining. "The battle will happen after lunch so take this time to get everything in order."

The students turned on their screens and began working. Those whose nations had crumbled still had reports to write as well as applications that needed to be submitted. Homework was turned in electronically and graded the instant it was received. After that they were to continue studying pokégirls or things related to their future careers.

The easiest job to get after leaving the academy was that of a tamer, it was also one of the most necessary. Students at the academy were required to take the tamers exam regardless of their chosen profession. Depending on the grades received the students could select from a number of starter pokégirls and special request could be put in for the school to receive them.

~~~~~
During lunch Clarissa and Kelly sat together trying to figure out how to win the battle. With the extra time given Kelly's forces would get there in time to assist but the numbers were still out of balance. They could still access the program through their laptops and prepare for the battle but until class started again there was nothing they could do aside from move troops around and even that was somewhat limited.
"Are you sure this is going to work?" Kelly asked while looking at the screen.
"There's nothing to stop me. The terrain is perfect and if nothing else it's unexpected." Clarissa explained and moved more of her troops around. "I'm still not entirely sure how you managed to get so many dragon-types but I'm not going to complain either."
"Tamers from the other academies were laying siege to their territory. I stepped in and protected them then claimed the lands and left them in charge. A few decades went by and the leaders needed to expand. So I offered them a 20% stake to the lands they helped to capture as my allies. They follow me and I follow you so they follow you."
"Well played. The early breeding programs I set up for the military means I have the pokégirls I need to run phase two of the battle." Clarissa thought to the plan and the main forces she would be using and shook her head. "I'm actually a little disappointed in myself."
"Why's that?"
"I had to pull pokégirls from tamer's harems to fight this battle. Yeah the tamers were well compensated for the trouble and in the end it's what will guarantee their safety under my rule, but some of them won't be coming back."
Kelly swallowed a bite of her sandwich and looked at the screen. "I'm not sure how attached we were supposed to become to our lands or their people... but we created them and as leaders it's our responsibility. Like it or not we have to do what is necessary." She got closer and whispered. "Just like if you join my harem. I'll have a responsibility to you."
Clarissa sat back and relaxed. "You're wrong; we'll have a responsibility to each other."
"Well aren't you two just cozy." Spoke Sharp taking the seat across from them. "Ya know, I've always wondered why two incredibly hot girls such as yourselves never had boyfriends. I guess now I know."
Both girls looked up and laughed. Kelly cocked her head to the side and looked across all the boys in the cafeteria. "Oh I don't know, there are some fine specimens in here. I wouldn't count you as one though. God forbid I ever have to suffer under you."
The blond haired boy clenched his fist in frustration. "I've never heard anyone complain. My pokégirl never does."
"That's right, because the moans of ecstasy coming from a Nymph are to be trusted." Clarissa chucked. "Those girls will get off against a doorframe if that's what it takes. Tame a Mini-Top; then I'll be impressed."
"Well then, how about a bet? My nation wins the battle; I get to tame both of you."
Kelly arched an eyebrow and looked to Clarissa. "Two things; A we're not pokégirls so it’s not called taming and B you don't have anything we want."
Clarissa's eyes narrowed. "Actually he does have something I want... his territory. This is between you and me big boy, so if I win we take everything. You'll hand over all your land to me and my allies."
"You have a deal." He stuck his hand out to shake hers and was taken by surprise by the strength of her grip. "Can't wait until that hand is around my dick." He sneered before getting up and leaving.
"Are you sure about this C.T.?
"Yeah, everything should work out... I think."
~~~~~

The students returned to class and took their seats. Word had spread about the bet and everyone was waiting to see who would come out on top. Tiffany had caught wind of bet as well and stopped Clarissa in the hall. There weren't any rules against wagering on their performance but she was more concerned with the stakes. Clarissa brushed it off and took her seat leaving Tiffany to wonder what was up her sleeve.

The Duelist moved her chair to the back of the class then addressed them. "Ok class, Ms. Tanner, Ms. Ross, Mr. Sharp, Mr. Bryant, Mr. Cozik, and Mr. Mock are about to start their battle. There will be no talking except between allies and no distractions. You five may begin when ready."

The board switched to an overhead view of the battlefield with troop counters on each side. Guns were considered useless for the most part and neither side had any so it was going to be one large brawl. The students sat at their desk manipulating troops and the actions were being carried out on the holo-board. With nothing more than a few miles between both sides Sharps forces started to press forward.

Clarissa's side took up defensive positions and braced for the attack. Several dozen dragon-types flew in V formation overhead and started towards the front lines. Clarissa did all she could then sat back in her chair and kicked her feet up.

Sharp's forces were just a half mile from engaging when a muffled explosion was heard and his entire frontline vanished. Everyone in class started to murmur and sat forward to stare at the screen. The army came to a stop and waited for orders when another explosion was heard and the ground caved in. Clarissa sat forward and started hitting the same button over and over then nodded to Kelly.

More explosions triggered and each one pulled down more of the attacking army. At the same time Hyperbeams rained down from the dragons, leaving long lines of death and destruction. Students watched as the troop total on Sharp's end started going down. With each second that went by the dragons made more passes and destroyed more pokégirls. After that her troops switched to the offensive and charged into the carnage, it became a massacre. Screams and explosions emanated from the screen as the slaughter continued and while both sides were losing forces Sharps numbers were dropping faster.

Sharp was seconds away from throwing his chair when he got out of his seat. "What kind of bullshit was that? You cheated, I don't know how but I know you did!"

"Mr. Sharp, take your seat! Ms. Tanner, I admit I'm skeptical and would like to know exactly what you did to pull off that victory."

"Well that's what happens when you send a thousand DigTits and three thousand Bombshells tunneling underground. The DigTits made the tunnels and the Bombshells just had to wait until I gave the signal. The rest of the ground had been hollowed out by ground pokégirls and caved in due to the use of Explosion and weight of the troops on the surface. After the army was stuck inside the holes the dragons flew overhead and used Hyperbeams to kill the weaker pokégirls and weaken the stronger ones. Now my army is on the attack, taking prisoners and pretty much cleaning up." Clarissa stated in a flippant tone.

Tiffany's eyes sharpened as she glared at the teen. "I want to see you after class young lady."

"But..."

"No buts, after class. Now I believe there was a wager you two had over who would win this battle." The students had gone still and quiet as the Duelist's gaze passed across the room. "Oh yes, I know all about that little bet and I expect Mr. Sharp to make good on his end of the bargain."

~~~~~
After Sharp's utter defeat the students were rounded up for physical training. Clarissa had to be extra careful not to overdo it. Her strength, her speed, her stamina, everything was becoming far above her average abilities. Not that she was out of shape but suddenly being able to jump fifteen feet would look suspicious to anyone who was human. She decided to keep pace with Kelly just to be sure she didn't go too far.
The school day had come to an end but Clarissa still needed to see her instructor. The Duelist was at her desk filling out paperwork when the teen poked her head into the doorway. "Enter Ms. Tanner; there are some things we need to talk about."
Clarissa entered the room and sat down in the chair that was placed in front of the desk. She felt slightly nervous looking up at the Duelist. Tiffany was much taller than most of the Duelist she had seen but it was explained that she had evolved from the template and kept her looks.
"Did I do something wrong Miss. Tiffany?"
"No, quite the opposite. Here." She handed over the manila envelope. "Those are your copies of the paperwork I'm submitting. I'll be endorsing you as a candidate for the Officer Program in the military."
Clarissa blinked a few times and pulled the paper out. It was all there; her grades, exam scores, Tiffany's personal assessment, and the academy seal as well as enforcements by Tiffany's Master and the school's Headmaster. Tears began to fall as she put her head down, she was happy but she also knew it was all for nothing. Pokégirls didn't have high ranks in the Indigo Military.
"I... I don't know what to say... Thank you." She sobbed.
"That was excellent work dealing with and adversary who's might trumped your own. I can honestly say I couldn't have done a better job myself. But there's another thing we need to talk about."
The teen attempted to dry her eyes and gave a questioning look. "Ma'am?"
Tiffany took a deep breath at leaned forward in her chair. "You're going through threshold."
Panic raced through Clarissa but laughed it off like the Duelist didn't know what she was talking about. "I think you're mistaken Miss. Tiffany."
"You can't hide it from me young lady. I've been watching you. You've shown promise from the first day you stepped into my class so I've naturally had my eye on you. I've seen the changes, they're subtle but they're there. You'll be a pokégirl soon."
"You can't tell anyone." She whispered frantically. "My parents... My dad, I don't know what he'll do if he finds out... Wait... If you knew then why endorse me?"
"Times are changing young lady. I know your father and people like him are quickly falling out of the majority. Things are going to be tough but I want you to try anyway. You may never be an officer but that card will guarantee you a higher rank than I had."
Clarissa hugged herself tightly and rocked in the chair. "I won't make it in time; I'll be a Tarot soon. I'll lose everything when that happens. My name, my family, everything. I... I... I need to go." She stood abruptly and started for the door.
"Look..." The Duelist sighed. "You know how to contact me. If anything comes up, you need anything at all, you call me."
The teen nodded weakly and ran towards her locker and to a waiting Kelly. "What's wrong, what'd she say?" Clarissa handed her the paper then slumped down against the locker and ran her hands through her brown hair. "This is good news right? I mean, we both passed and you can become an off...ic...er... oh shit."
"Right, I can't. I've never heard of a pokégirl officer in the military."
"So... What are you going to do?"
Clarissa's head was starting to hurt and she was having a hard time thinking clearly. "I don't know, I need to get home and sort this out. I'll call you later."
~~~~~

On her walk home Clarissa passed by the gym again. It was late in the evening and just starting cool. She had taken the long way around to clear her head and told her brother she would meet him later. There was so much to consider she couldn't think straight. On top of that her body was starting to hurt. Though the breeze was cool she felt hot.

With her head held low she continued on her way home. So focused was she on the ground she didn't see where she was going until she ran headlong into some one. They both fell down then stared back at each other. The girl Clarissa collided with wore a military exercise uniform and glared back at her.

"Watch where you're going runt." The brown haired girl barked.

Clarissa was about to shout at her when another girl appeared behind the first one. This one had vibrant red hair with emerald green eyes and wore a full suit of armor. "You apologize to her this instant Corporal or the Captain will hear about this and you'll be running laps until you drop."

The brown haired girl looked terrified and jumped to her feet. "My apologizes, I'm sorry I knocked you down."

Clarissa stood up and dusted herself off. She could see intense fear in the girl’s eyes and didn't want to make things worse. "Don't worry about it; I wasn't looking where I was going either. You two have a good evening." She said quickly before walking off. 'Is that what I have to look forward to as a military pokégirl? Being afraid of my commanding officer and then waiting for them to screw me at their leisure. Tamer is the way to go. But maybe Tiffany was right, maybe everything will be ok. Two weeks until schools over, I'll be fine.'

Finally home she made her way inside. Her mother had already started dinner and her father was watching the news. She was planning to just slink by and go to her room when he called to her.

"Get in here young lady." She muffled a curse then went to take a seat on the couch. "Terrence said that that pokégirl teacher of yours held you after class, mind explaining why?"

"It was nothing big; she just had some information to give me." She spoke quickly and clutched at her bag, the pain of her body suddenly intensifying.

"It's only two weeks until school is over, you'd better not have gotten in trouble again. What's that envelope?"

"It's nothing, I've hand a long day and I just want to go and lay down." Her chest had been hurting and she was feeling dizzy. Beads of sweat rolled down the corners of her face and her breathing was becoming shallow.

"Hand it over." He spoke in a gruff and demanding tone. He snatched the envelope from her hand when she put it out and opened it immediately. It only took a few second to read over its contents and when he finished his eyes lit up. "Hot damn! Beth, get in here you've got to see this!"

Her mother was stirring a mixing bowl for the cake she was planning on making but walked into the room. "What, what happened?"

"Clarissa is being recommended to join the military as an officer! That's my girl!" He boasted with no lack of fatherly pride. "I can't wait to tell the guys."

"What?! That's wonder full. Good job sweetie... Clarissa?"

The teen wasn't looking good at all. She had hunched over and was clutching at her chest as the pain continued to surge through her body. A faint glow appeared around her as she fell to her knees gasping. "Not now... ple... please, not now..." The glowing brightened as she felt power surging through her, the pain intensified and pulled at her limbs. Finally it was too much for her, she tried to stand but fell forward hitting her head on the table.

~~~~~
Clarissa awoke with a gasp and her eyes snapped opened then shut again. Her head was still ringing and as she reached up she could feel the lump that had formed. She could feel something else too. Her hand was clutched around something, her baton.
The magical item, her sign as a Tarot, the thing that guaranteed she was a pokégirl and her life as she knew it was over. It appeared to be more of a blunt dagger than a baton, fine markings and magical glyphs starting from the bottom and leading to a fierce lions head near the top. She wanted to throw it away, break it, anything she could think of if it meant she would be free of the misfortune it brought with it.
A muffled sound caught her attention and she turned her head towards her door. A quick glance at the clock told her it was one in the morning. The transformation and subsequent impact with the table had knocked her out for five hours. As she sat up she noticed that the pain was fading, a small consolation in the grand scheme of things. She crept out of bed and placed her ear to the door to listen out the other side. Down stairs her parents were going back and forth and things did not sound good for her.
"A pokégirl, I can't fucking believe it." Daniel verbally spat as he downed his drink and poured another one. "She got this from you ya know."
"Oh, so you're telling me your family doesn't have ANY pokégirl blood flowing through it?"
"That's not the point Bethany. None of the women in my family were ever recorded to have gone through threshold."
"After meeting your elitist SEELE father I wonder just how true that is. I wouldn't be surprised if the names weren't just stricken from the family tree."
"That's neither here nor there. Now I just need to figure out what to do about her."
Beth sat forward and fixed him with a stern look. "What do you mean 'what to do'? She's our daughter, there's nothing to do."
He slammed back the drink then poured another. "She's a pokégirl; she can't go to school, she can't get a job, she can't do anything!"
"Why can't she go to school? We're the only ones who know about this, we could just hide it for a while. We can move to a pro-rights city."
He downed the drink then slammed the glass onto the table. "And spend the rest of my days around a bunch of Parity assholes?! We're not moving!"
"She's your daughter, you can't do that for her?!"
"She's not my daughter! Not anymore! She's a monster, a thing!" Daniel yelled in anger. They both sat in silence for several minutes as he thought, all the while knocking back drink after drink. "I've decided... I'm handing her over to the Hunter's Guild."
"No... You can't." Beth sobbed. She wasn't ignorant to the world around her and knew what he was suggesting meant. "The things you've done to pokégirls... the things you've seen them do to pokégirls, you can't do that to our daughter. You can't put her through that"
Daniel's voice came out slurred and filled with disgust. "That thing isn't my daughter..."
Hurt tore through the teen as she sat a listened. Her mother pleading with everything she had and her father going on his drunken rant. She heard all she needed to, refusing to be neither a burden to her mother nor a slave to the Hunter's Guild. The poképack that was given to her for camping would be good enough to fit some clothes in. Her casual wear would be sufficient for traveling; she wouldn't need anything special anymore.
Taking one last look around the room she grabbed her violin case and stuffed it in her pack. Before she left there was one last thing to do.
Soft footsteps paddled down the hall as she crept silently towards her brother’s room. When she opened the door he was still in bed sleeping. His cheeks were still moist from the tears and she placed a gentle hand on his head. She wanted to wake him, to say goodbye and tell him everything was ok, but she couldn't. He was a kind boy at a young age and wouldn't understand what she was doing or why. Instead she settled on a kiss to his forehead. The slight smile he gave was all she needed to set her on her way and without a word she jumped out the window.
Outside she looked to her home for the last time. Even if she went back things would never be the same. With shaky hands she pulled out her phone and dialed to the only person she could count on. It rang a few times and for a moment she felt despair. Finally it picked up on the other end. "Kelly... I'm gonna need someplace to stay for a while."
_____
Dogpatch, present day
The Duelist looked up at the woman and fought back the tears that were building up. A long time had passed since they last saw each other. Behind her, the brother she left all those years ago. He had grown up and by her recollection would have just become old enough to be a tamer. The little girl, the little sister she never knew she had, a replacement for the daughter her parents had lost.
Beth held her youngest daughter close in a rush of emotion. "Clarissa? Is that really you?"
Kelly continued to hold it together as best she could but was losing ground quickly. Finally she broke and threw her arms around her mom and sister. "Mom, I can't believe it. I've missed you so much." She sobbed, clutching gently and with unknown joy.
Chesra was speechless and stunned. Kelly had never talked about her parents to anyone. They all knew she was a threshold case but when questioned about her past she would send them away and demand to be left alone. When her mind finally returned to her she radioed to the guardians watching the children to bring them all out. The Duelist wouldn't be able to hold the labyrinth much longer from the looks of things.
"Kel, the children are out. Take a break and I'll catch up to you later." Chesra spoke quickly. "Or... would you like me to tell Marco."
Kelly reluctantly let go and turned to Chesra after whipping her eyes. "No... I'll be fine. Thanks..."
The area began to clear quickly enough and soon it was just the four of them standing there. There were so many things that needed to be said, too many. Eventually they made their way to a picnic area and sat down. Now that the initial shock had worn off they didn't know where to begin.
Finally Cameron spoke up. "So you're my big sister?"
Beth spoke before Kelly could. "Yes, that's your big sister Clarissa. She left home before you were born and we haven't seen her in a long time."
The little girl squealed in delight and hugged Kelly around the waist. "I have a big sister."
"And I guess I have a little sister." Kelly hugged back. She then turned her attention back to her mother. "You look good... Mom."
"You too..." Beth smiled weakly. Kelly looked exactly the same as the last time she saw her, minus a large lump on her head. "You left so suddenly... You didn't even say goodbye."
"I know... I'm sorry. But I couldn't stay, I wasn’t going to be a burden and I refused to be a part of the Hunter's Guild." Beth sucked in a tense breath. She had always wondered why she left home. Now it made perfect sense. "How is dad anyway?"
"I was never going to let him..."
Kelly cut her off. "I don't care anymore, how is that insufferable bastard?"
"He's fine... he misses you. As a matter of fact I'm sure he's walking around here, somewhere."
Anger ripple through Kelly in a massive wave as she thought back to the last things she heard him say. "No need to lie for him mom. There's no reason to miss a monster like me."
Kelly's tone struck a chord with Beth. She could feel the hurt in her daughter’s voice. "You're not a monster and no matter what he says you're still my daughter." Her eyes went wide when she spotted the lumbering figure making its way over. "Here he comes down."
Daniel had taken his time going through the crowd. He hated the idea of Sadie Pokén's day out of principal but Terrence would be leaving home soon and he wanted to make sure his son was looking for quality pokégirls. As he got close he could see his family sitting at the table talking to someone. The girl looked pretty tiny but if she was a pokégirl then it wouldn't stop her from doing damage. "Hey, did you find a good one?"
Beth smiled weakly and nodded. "The best of them all."
"Well let’s have a look at her." He replied in a judgmental tone.
Kelly's brow furrowed in anger as she stood up and turned quickly to face him. She was trying her best to suppress her rage, one slip and Marco would be there in seconds. Normally she could be sure he wouldn't do anything rash but she wouldn't know what to do if the two of them got into it. "Afternoon..."
Daniel stopped dead in his tracks when he saw her. The look in her eyes; angry bitter hatred. "You..." He spoke quietly. It all came flooding back to him. The shame of having his daughter threshold, the comments from his fellow guild members, and the pain Beth went through when she discovered her little girl had run away. "How dare you show your face to me?"
"Yep, still an insufferable bastard." She shot back and rolled her eyes.
"The fuck you say to me young lady?"
"Don't you young lady me, you don't have the right to say a word to me. You gave that up." She spat back.
"Do you have any idea what you put us through? Your mother was worried sick about you. It was bad enough that you turned into a pokégirl but then you just ran off?"
"Like you gave a shit, you were going to send me to the Hunter's Guild!" She watched as his eyes went wide and stepped forward. "That's right, I heard it all, I still remember it like it was yesterday. You didn't have a daughter anymore; I was just a pokégirl... a monster to you. So ya know what, fuck off."
"I'm not going to do this here and I'm not going to be talked down to by some pokégirl. I'm dragging you home and I'm going to teach you some manners."
Kelly outright laughed at the audacity of the statement. "No, no no, fuck you, and no." Her laughing stopped when she saw the person walking up and it caused her to freeze.
In that moment Daniel pulled back to backhand her. Caught off guard Kelly winced and braced for the hit then cracked an eye when it never came. Her father’s arm had been seized and he was pushed away by the man who had shown up. Still frozen all she could do was stand there as the interloper stood in front of her facing her dad.
Daniel was livid now. "Get out of my way bud. This is a family matter."
"You're goddamn right it is. I don't know who you think you are but I'll be damned if I let you lay a finger on my future daughter in-law." Eric barked.
"Mr. Readman..." Kelly spoke softly.
"She's my fucking daughter and a pokégirl, so I'll discipline her how I please. Do you have any idea how disgraceful it is to have your child turn into a pokégirl?"
"I have three daughters and sooner or later one of them will probably go through threshold. But I know I wouldn't treat them any different if they did, they are my children."
Finally regaining her sense Kelly poked her head out from around Eric's back. "I'm not your daughter anymore and this is Sadie Pokén's day, so there is no reason what so ever for me to do what you say. Lay a finger on me and I'll take the whole arm."
Daniel tried to move towards Kelly again but got shoved back by Eric. Both men squared off but Daniel struck first, landing a solid right to the jaw. Not to be out done Eric connected with two quick punches then tackled him to the ground.
Just as quickly as the fight started it was over. Security pokégirls seemed to appear out of now where and pulled the men apart. Eric stopped struggling immediately and with some coaxing from Beth so did Daniel. They were about to be hauled away until a sharp whistle got their attention.
Kelly was rubbing her temples and pinched the bridge of her nose in aggravation. "Release them both."
The lead security girl stepped forward. "They were causing a disturbance and are to be taken in."
"This was a simple family dispute that got out of hand they won't be causing any more problems so I want them released."
"I'm sorry but I don't have the authority to make that call."
Kelly had taken off her sash earlier but quickly retrieved it as well as her ID card from her bag. "I do, I'll be taking full responsibility for both of them. We won't have any more problems."
The security girls nodded and released both men while the lead girl looked at the presented ID card. "As you command, have a good day Major."
"Thank you Kelly." Eric spoke quickly before looking back at Daniel.
"You're welcome Mr. Readman."
"I keep telling you to call me Eric. I don't know what you did to her but she was still willing to get you off the hook. Take the free pass and get lost."
"This isn't over." Daniel growled as he walked off.
Kelly plopped back down on the bench and heaved a giant sigh. "That felt good to let out. What a mess." She glanced back to her mother, brother, and sister. "I'm sorry; I'm just causing problems for you now."
Beth moved around the table and pulled Kelly into a hug. "You've never been a problem to me; you'll always be my little girl and I'll always love you." Her eyes went upward and saw Eric with his back turned as he continued to watch Daniel leave. "And you, Mr. Readman was it?"
"Yes Miss. ... I didn't get your name."
"Beth, Beth Tanner, Thank you for defending her. Daniel can be an ass at times but what he did was uncalled for. How long have you known Clarissa?"
"Clarissa? Oh, we all know her as Kelly. I first met her I'd say around seven years ago. Sweet girl; my wife and I love having her around."
"Kelly was Clarissa's best friend at the academy. Poor girl was killed by a feral during her tamer's journey."
Kelly rolled the thin silver necklace across her fingers. The tooth attached to it belonged to Marco but the necklace was her friend's. "She was my tamer... I almost died that day too. Marco and the others came out of nowhere and saved the two of us that were left. I took her name to remember her and help continue her journey."
Beth hugged her daughter again. "We had asked her before she left if she knew where you had gone. I kind of figured she had you and thought it was for the best so I let it go. But what do you do now."
"If dad still cared at all he would be proud to know that I'm an officer in the Indigo Military, Major Kelly."
"Well I'm proud of you. Successful military pokégirl and engaged from the sound of things. So when do I get to meet him?"
The Duelist gave a nervous chuckle. While she enjoyed having Eric come to her defense and refer to her as daughter in-law nothing was official between her and Marco. "Nothing's official yet. He's a sweet guy normally but I'm happy he didn't run into dad, the fight would have been much worse." The sound of a throat being cleared caught her attention and made her jump.
Marco was walking up from the entrance and didn't look very amused. "So I'm walking around making my rounds, you know standard fair, and I hear this call come over the radio about two older men fighting over a pokégirl. I figure I'm not too far away I should go check it out. I pass by the area where you and Chesra are designated to be and neither of you were around. Hi dad." He greeted, noting the bruise on his cheek and sitting down. "Now I think to myself, it's very possible that one of my girls is the cause of such an issue but doubtful. Never the less I continue on and I run into my father, sporting a lovely bruise, and my dear Kelly. So now that I'm fully involved I get to ask, what happened?"
Kelly faked a laugh and a smile while trying to figure out what to say. She was hoping to introduce Marco to her mother at a later date but fate just wasn't going to be her friend today. "Colonel... Marco, I'd like you to meet Beth Tanner, my mother. Mom this is Marco, my tamer and a Colonel in the Indigo Military."
Marco's eyes went wide for a moment then he turned to greet the woman despite how nervous the situation made him. "Good afternoon Miss. Tanner, I'd like to say Kelly's told me all about you but this is the first time she's mentioned you. It’s an honor."
"So you're the man Clarissa is so taken with. I'm please to meet the one who’s been taking care of my little girl. Can't help but say you're appearance surprises me though."
"Pardon?"
"Sorry I don't mean to offend, but you're old for a tamer and young for a Colonel. Still very handsome, just like she said."
"Well I can't say I've done it all alone, Kelly's been my Alpha for a number of years and takes care of things when I'm not around." He spoke with pride and put his arm around the Duelist. "So what was the cause of the disturbance?"
Beth shook her head in disgust and pulled Cameron onto her lap. "Clarissa... Kelly didn't leave home on the best of terms. They, her and her father, got into it and when he was about to hit her your father came to her defense. A few punches were exchanged and security broke it up. I've never been so embarrassed." As she looked at Marco she saw a hint of something unsettling behind his eyes. "Everything's ok though, he won't be a problem to anyone. So... you two are engaged?"
Kelly squeezed his arm in embarrassment and spoke quickly before he could. "Mom, I said it was nothing official yet. We still have a lot of work to do before we can settle down."
"Well don't take too long, I don't want to be ancient when my grandchildren are born."
Now both of them were embarrassed. To compound their problems the sound of bells rang clearly in their ears and they both knew what that meant. Vana appeared a short distance in front of her husband and released the hands of her youngest daughters before placing it against the bruise on the side of his face. She had him healed in no time while Erica and Nadia ran up and hugged their brother from behind.
The Lady Luck didn't appear to be the least bit amused by the situation and fixed her husband with a cold look. "Someone has some misfortune heading there way. Where is he?"
Eric placed a comforting arm around her waist and pulled her into a kiss. "No need to worry about that, I got my shots in. Besides, I'd like you to meet someone." He motioned over to the table where their kids had congregated. "Hun, this is Beth Tanner, Kelly's mom."
Vana got herself composed and approached the table. "It's a pleasure to meet you, now I see where our dear Kelly gets her good looks."
Beth smiled modestly and took in the sight. She hadn't expected a pokéwoman to be Marco's mother and had to hide her envy at the woman's looks. "Wow, you're Marco's mom? You look like you're still in your early thirties."
Vana gave a faint blush and smiled in return. "You could say it's one of the few fringe benefits to being a pokéwoman. Still it's nice to finally meet; we must have you over for dinner sometime."
"I would love that; we can get to know each other better. I'd invite Daniel but I doubt he'd want to join us."
The eyes of the Lady Luck hardened. "I understand, still you and yours are more than welcome. We can trade stories of these two as children."
Kelly stood up quickly and pulled Marco with her. "We still have more rounds to do and I need to get back to my area." Reaching into her bag she pulled out a small card and handed it to her mom then pulled her into a tight hug. "I love you mom. Call this number and we can talk later or I can just come and get you."
"I love you too dear; it looks like you've found a good family. Marco, it was great to meet you and I look forward to hearing more about you."
Marco nodded slightly. "The pleasure was all mine."
As they were about to leave Terrence stepped in front of him. Height didn't run in the family but he didn't waver as he stuck his hand out. "You be sure to take care of my sister. Colonel or not I'll find you if I have to."
Marco firmed his grip as they shook hands. "That's the same thing I told my brother in-law. I'd expect nothing less from a good brother."
Marco and Kelly began their walk back to her station. Though there was a lot going on things were strangely silent between the two of them. A few minutes passed and Kelly was starting to relax, it had been an exhausting experience. Seeing her mother again, telling off her father, the things Eric said; it was almost too much.
"So, we're engaged now?" Marco asked with a hint of light hearted humor.
The Duelist blushed red and moved closer to his side. "You tell me, it was your dad that called me his future daughter in-law. Was there something I missed?"
Marco stammered for a moment then relented. "Well he's not lying. One day you and I are going to be married, but I guess that means you wouldn't appreciate it if I broke your dad's neck."
The tiny Duelist appeared to vibrate with anger. "I hate him, I hate him so much. The things he said, the things he did, what he was planning to do to me... but as much as I hate him he's still my dad." She shivered lightly and he pulled her closer. "I could feel how mad you were and I know that you would protect me from him... but I don't want... I don't want you, or Eric, or especially Vana to harm him."
"You think I would fight your father?"
"You fought yours to show honor to Chesra. You fought Evan for the sake of Ari, you fought Richard in the name of Henrietta, and we took on the pirates and Sanctuary for Renae. I know exactly how far you're willing to go to make the women around you happy and keep them safe. And you know what we're willing to do for you... My mom was right... I found a good family."
"And I've found a good wife."
~~~~~

As the day continued on hordes of tamers continued to make their way to Dogpatch. Evening was approaching and the night was cool. Barrel fires had been set up to keep warm but the real heat was coming from Taming Paradise. A large spot set aside for tamers and pokégirls to get to know each other better. One had to be of taming age to enter and security made sure that rule was strictly enforced.

Now that their work for the day was done Avalanche was free to move around and enjoy themselves. Chesra had gone to pick up Chris, Elise, and Ariel after they had gotten off from work so everyone was in attendance. Marco was perfectly happy to not venture into Taming Paradise and with his button being red not many pokégirls were trying to get or looking for his attention. Kelly had taken off again to spend more time with her, the rest of the unit had run off, and that left Marco alone to walk around with Chris. Their walk brought them to the carnival type rides along with several other couples.

"It's chilly but a perfect night none the less." Chris spoke with a content sigh. "Was it super busy out there?"

"The day was interesting enough, got to meet Kelly's mother."

"I heard, she's out with her right now. So how'd that go?"

"Interesting. It's her father that's in my crosshairs now. But I promised I wouldn't do anything if or when we cross paths. How were things in Stone Town?"

"Uneventful, pokégirls were having as good a time as they could but it's nothing compared to this." She said with a slight shiver.

"This is one of my favorite times of the year. Seeing everyone getting along, pokégirls finding good tamers. Almost makes me forget that there are people trying to end my life."

Chris grabbed him by the arm and moved towards the line for the Ferris wheel. "Should we be worried that they'll try and attack you here?"

"I seriously doubt it. Hunting me down after gym battles is one thing but coming after me in an area filled with security like this is another. But I'm still not letting my guard down."

"The others aren't either, not after that stunt you pulled in Sapphron." She said with a hint of sadness. "I can honestly say I'm happy I wasn't there. I don't think I couldn't have forgiven you after that."

They both walked in silence as the line inched forward people cycled through the ride. Finally they were seated and starting their round on the Ferris wheel. Chris's shivering had finally gotten Marco's attention and he pulled her in tight to share his warmth. A slight smile crept across his face as he looked out over the moving crowd.

"Ya know, this is currently the best view in Indigo."

"That is by far the cheesiest line I've heard in a long time, flattering as it may be." Chris laughed.

"Oh? Wasn't talking about you."

Mood killed she gave him a light tap in the ribs. "Well then, what were you talking about?"

Grabbing her hand he activated his Aura Sight and pointed out over the mass of people. The detective was left speechless; thousands of flames appeared to dance around each other as people moved this way and that. Every color she could imagine was displayed across the sea of people and some even pulsated to an almost rhythmic beat.

"This is what I see with my Aura Sight."

Without thinking she had moved in closer to get a better view and pressed up against him. "It's... beyond description."

"You're not half bad yourself." He said with a grin and a peck on her cheek.

Chris could feel the blood rushing to her head and settled back in the car. Though the action was unexpected she wasn't going to complain about it. Still, her nerves were starting to get the better of her and she suddenly found it difficult to keep from moving around.

Once back on the ground she quietly called to Henrietta and told Marco they would be back soon. Not having anything better to do he found a picnic table by a fire to sit at and waited patiently. Unknown to Marco someone else was waiting to get a chance to be alone with him too.

The brown haired female took a seat at the same table and faced away from him. He didn't recognize her at first but as the flames flickered he caught a glimpse at the scars on her face and neck. He was about to sound an alarm but thought better of it. If she had wanted him dead she could have done it already.

"Rachel." He spoke without a hint of amusement.

She didn't turn to face him, instead putting her hands closer to the fire. "Marco. I figured you would have remembered my name."

"I do, I just remember liking you more when I knew you as Rachel. Water under the bridge now."

"That was harsh. And here I am, meeting you on somewhat neutral ground."

A smirk appeared on his face as he continued to look at her. While her blood gifts could be useful depending on the situation against him it just allowed for a perfect picture of her emotional state. She was nervous about being around him. "You're not here to fight and I don't feel like having one right now. So what do you want... better yet, how did you find me this time?"

"The useful files that we have on you said you always help with security in Dogpatch for Sadie Pokén's day. The other people after you know this too but it would be stupid to try something here. Well... that's what I told them."

Marco's Aura Sight activated as he looked around. Everything was ok until his eyes focused on the Ferris wheel. It was easy to pick out threat flames in an area filled with happy people. "So that means I don't need to send someone to deal with the snipers that are trained on me?"

Angelica's once relaxed expression went to panicked in an instant. "No, you don't. They are there to keep me safe from you."

He eased forward, his voice coming out in a menacing tone. "But you don't feel safe. So I'll ask again, why are you here?"

Angelica turned to face him directly. "Just here for a friendly chat. My boss is quite upset about Evan's death and has devoted a large number of people to the sole purpose of killing you."

Marco looked at his hand and started counting on his fingers. "Spencer, Haures, Minerva, Delilah, Domico, Tessa, Andzral, Campbell, you; one of my girls once said that with the time and energy he's put into trying to take mine he could have trained his own girls. Also I wonder how he would take knowing that you're just as responsible for Evan's death as I am."

Angelica was about to answer when Chris took a seat next to Marco. The detective wasn't happy to see the female but did her best to keep calm. "Angelica, you're in the wrong part of town. I suggest you leave."

"I believe your name was Chris was it? How's that knee treating you, you seem to be walking fine."

"You tryin to pick a fight?"

"I was trying to have a conversation with Mr. Readman without unnecessary bloodshed. But I'll leave now." She stood then looked to Marco. "Unless you plan to stop me."

"Well we already captured your snipers; I figured you would want to join them." Marco could feel the intense waves of panic coming off her and put up a gentle hand to calm her down. "Relax, we haven't gone near them. Tell your boss that I'm done fucking around and I'm done taking prisoners. I'll be coming for him soon enough. And as for you, I don't know why you work for them or what your stake in this is but I suggest you cut ties while you have the chance."

"If it were only that simple." She spoke in a far off voice. "I can say with complete honesty that I wish the circumstances were different, that this wasn't my job... that I had a way out. No matter, water under the bridge as you said. I'll relay your message in a few days and when we meet again I guess we'll be full-fledged enemies. Till next time Marco."

Three girls teleported in behind her and just as quickly as they appeared they were gone. Marco was joined by Chesra and Henrietta then Carrie and Jean. The five women wore confused looks as they tried to figure out why he let her go.

Marco just sat silently and drummed his fingers against the table. Chris placed one hand on his shoulder then the other against his arm. "What's rolling through that mind of yours?"

"Trying to figure out the best way to deal with an enemy who doesn't want to fight."

Henrietta took a seat on the table and crossed her legs. "Experience has told me that those are the easiest to kill. Why didn't you just let me do it now and be done with her?"

"She didn't come here looking for a fight Rietta. She wants out but something has her stuck. I don't know what kind of hold they have on her but it's enough to have her doing their bidding. The way she spoke makes it sound like she has control over the people coming after me."

"Never the less she needs to be dealt with... one way or another." Spoke Chesra. "I get the feeling that there was more to her coming to see you than she was letting on."

"I know there was. She doesn't seem the type to take unnecessary risk and if all she wanted was to kill me she had her chance. So now the question is what does she want?"
