Chapter 49

         “Welcome back!” Fu waved cheerfully when Cristina and Andrew entered the clearing, similar congratulations rising from the other assembled pokegirls. “THREE CHEERS FOR THE HAPPY COUPLE! HIP HIP!”

         “Hoorayy.” Andrew muttered quietly, grinning at the happy faces. When they finished Cristina cleared her throat.

         “We’re starting back into the swing of things today.” She called. “But first, we get to set your benchmarks. I need a volunteer to run the courses first and be the first mark.” She pretended to survey the lack of hands before turning. “Andrew, if you would?”

         Andrew started. “Wait. Me?”

         “Let’s see what you can do these days.” Cristina grinned at him. “Get going.”

         Andrew sighed, stripping off his shirt and beginning to stretch. “Remember,” Cristina called as he approached the starting line, “you need to beat someone. Otherwise you get punished.”

         “Yea, yea.” He muttered.

         “Ready? Go!”

         Andrew took off towards the first obstacle, leaping to the tall bars and steadily swinging over the ground.

         “Isn’t this pointless?” Melody asked, sidling up next to Cristina. “Or are we all going to wear weight vests like before.”

         Cristina glanced at her with a smile. “Oh, no. I understand how to compare your growth and I will know when all of you are slacking off.” She turned back to watch Andrew shove through a web of tangled trees. “You will be tested against yourself, not the other, slower or weaker people here.” Melody felt a chill run down her spine at Cristina’s brutal glee. “Seeing Mary Lou has given me some wonderful ideas.”

         Melody slid back, glancing around and retreating to where Aella stood silently. The Shinryu glanced at Melody for a moment before turning her attention back to the others. “Hey.”

         “She’s scary.”

         Aella cracked a smile. “Only when she has to be.” She sighed. “Unlike me.”

         “I don’t think you’re scary.”

         Aella shook her head, turning to Melody. “Thanks, but I remember how you didn’t want to fight me back then. You’re afraid of me.” She looked around. “You all are.”

         “Do you want us to be?”

         Aella blinked. It took a moment for her to process the question and she turned back to Melody. “What? Why would I?”

         “Because you still haven’t done anything to change how we see you.” Melody replied, slightly louder than necessary so as to attract a few gazes. “It’s been a week and you haven’t tried anything.”

         Aella stared at her but looked away when Melody matched her gaze. “I just want things to go back to normal.”

         “We can’t just forget what happened.” Melody replied. “You need to take the first step.”

         Aella blinked back her tears, looking at Melody before gazing around at the other watching faces. “Like what?”

         “If you don’t know, I can’t help you.” Melody replied quietly. “It would be meaningless if it wasn’t sincere.”

         Aella watched her step away, glancing over her shoulder to see Cristina looking at her as well. She slowly lowered her gaze, eyes staring at the ground even though her mind was far away.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
         “Where is he?”
         Lucina curled her head up, blinking at the upside-down Blazicunt. “Oh, hey Nova. He’s out in the forest somewhere with Kuu.”
         Nova watched Lucina continue do midair crunches. “He was supposed to be in the gym with all of you.”
         Lucina gestured at the dwindling crowd. “He was until he finished. What’s up? Got something important to share?” She grinned, twisting around and pretending to lean on an invisible tabletop while her eyebrows waggled. “Kissy kissy?”
         Nova growled, sending a brief burst of flame into Lucina’s face and pushing past her, leaving the Shadowcat to put out the smoking portions of her fur. “MISS!”
         Cristina glanced up, recognizing the voice. “Hey, Nova. What can I help you with?”
         Melody grunted, pulling her feet free of Cristina’s hold. “I’ll jog.”
         Cristina nodded at her while Nova began to speak. “Where is Master?”
         Cristina rocked up onto her feet, standing and dusting off her hands. “His name is Andrew.”
         Nova hissed. “Yes. Where is Andrew.”
         “Having his own private time.” Cristina replied. “Is there an emergency?”
         “...no.”
         “Then I’ll let him know you were looking for him after lunch.”
         Nova hesitated, glancing down and awkwardly kicking her foot. “It’s ok.”
         “Want to tell him yourself?”
         Nova nodded. “Yea.”
         “Go get ‘em, girl.” Cristina chuckled at the embarrassed look Nova gave her. “I’m rooting for you.”
         “Daughter?”
         Cristina and Nova both turned, Nova hastily bowing when she saw Camiel. “War-Mother.”
         “As I have told you, I am your sister now, Nova.” Camiel said with a smile. “Call me by name, please.”
         Nova nodded. “Yes, Lady Camiel.”
         “Close enough.” Camiel chuckled. “Cristina, do you have a minute?”
         Cristina nodded. “Of course.”
         “I first want to say again how happy I am that you accepted me into your life in this way.” Camiel waved when Nova took her leave. “I didn’t think I could ever truly create love again, but walking you to him that day... I felt like my sins were being redeemed at long last.”
         Cristina blushed. “Thank you.”
         “Unfortunately, I have come to beg a favor.” Camiel sighed. “Do you remember Drifa?”
         “Of course.”
         “I went to visit her earlier, and she is getting worried.” Camiel shook her head. “She says as more pokegirls flock to her power, so too do the humans. She’s lost subjects to hunting patrols.”
         Cristina frowned. “This is an awkward situation.”
         “Yes, I figured you would understand it as such. We are too far away to help her, and she is not truly a part of this harem.”
         “She won’t want to move.”
         Camiel shook her head. “She already has. Her sanctuary was discovered over a month ago.”
         Cristina blinked. “Where is she now?”
         “She has retreated inland, to the north. There is a large mountain range that she is currently crossing with what is left of her subjects.”
         “How many?”
         “A dozen, maybe. She hopes that there are not humans waiting for them on the other side.”
         “If she is actively moving this isn’t a situation we can ignore.” Cristina replied, dusting herself off and speaking into the air. “Cortney, I have a job for you. Can you please check the maps we have and figure out where Drifa may be? She was originally around the south tip of Alaska.”
         “With the understanding that all pokegirls involved are likely arctic breeds, and Drifa would have started moving approximately one month ago, the mountain range in question is most likely what is known as the Mackenzie Mountains. It is well within the range of a group of healthy pokegirls at walking speed.” Cortney explained. “There are numerous human settlements to the north of the range, but none are large enough to still likely exist.”
         “So she’s safe.” Camiel breathed in relief.
         “If she can find the edge of Yukii’s territory she would be even safer.” Cristina mused.
         Camiel frowned, looking at Cristina for assistance. “Yukii?”
         “On my world, there was an Ice Maiden named Yukii who created a place for her kind to live away from humans.” Cristina explained. “Would that exist here?”
         “Yukii, the Ice Maiden...” Camiel thought. “I knew very few Ice Maidens. Drifa was created as a commander, but I did not see much of her troops. I only cared for her, if I am to be honest.”
         “Was she the only commander created?” Cristina asked.
         Camiel shook her head. “No, of course not. Perhaps this Yukii was one I never had reason to investigate.”
         “The Ice Maiden preserve would not be as large as it was on our world.” Cortney cautioned. “In fact it may not exist at all; the pressures that forced it to form have not occurred here.”
         “Still, if Yukii exists, she would have a group following her.” Cristina reasoned.
         “That is likely.”
         “We should look into that.” Cristina said firmly. “Camiel, can you go back to Drifa and let her know we are going to come make sure she’s alright?”
         Camiel nodded. “Who should I say is coming?”
         “If nothing else, I will come so I can advise Andrew. But I will talk to him first, and he may have his own ideas.”
         “I’m sure Drifa would like to see him again.”
         Cristina made a face. “As would her subjects. I’ll let you know what we decide. We may not travel for a few days.”
         Camiel nodded. “I’ll let her know later today. When you go, I will come with you, of course, to show you where she is.”
         “Perfect.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

         “She won’t just move down here, will she?” Andrew hefted a bundle of canvas, dragging it over to where the rest of the tent was sitting. “It would make things so much easier. She could even take up residence on Kuu’s land.”

         Cristina shook her head. “What I know about Drifa tells me she is a very stubborn woman. She has decided to carve a home for herself and she will do it no matter the cost.”

         “Yet she left her first home.”

         “I said stubborn, not stupid.” Cristina chuckled. “She is fleeing whatever human settlement discovered her so that she can have peace.”

         “Well, you were right to tell her that we would come help. The question is just how.” Andrew frowned to himself. “The most obvious thing to do would be to set up some sort of a supply line from us to her. We have an over abundance of food thanks to Kuu’s court.”

         “Teleport.”

         “Sure, but who could take time to do that? The only ones who can easily make that distance are Lyn and Camiel. Maybe Aella.” Andrew let off his carrying to wipe the sweat from his face and think. “First step. Who can even teleport?”

         “I can.”

         “And even if you could make the distance, you are my Beta. Acting as Alpha. You are so busy you would let them starve and never realize the time had already gone by.”

         Cristina shrugged. “Kuu. Melody, maybe. Albia.”

         “I don’t want to trust this kind of thing to Albia. No offense to her, but she’s not a diplomat. At all.” Andrew sighed. “It needs to be someone not on the combat team. That eliminates almost every teleporter we have. And Rein won’t do it.”

         “So we need a different idea?” Cristina frowned. “Wait, no. There is someone.”

         “Who?”

         Cristina looked at him. “Ann. She can learn to teleport. She’s an Ice Empress and would fit in perfectly as your ambassador.”

         “Do you think she would do it?”

         “I can make her want to do it.”

         “I’m sure you could.” Andrew shook his head. “I’m asking if Ann, right now, would like having that job.”

         Cristina nodded. “I wouldn’t suggest it if I didn’t think she would. She wants to prove that she belongs here even though she isn’t a combatant. She’ll take the job and throw everything she has into it.”

         “It will keep her away from Melody for extended periods of time.”

         “With teleporting, that won’t be as bad is you think.” Cristina replied. “This is a good idea. I’ll ask her when we get back home today.”

         “Make it so.” Andrew chuckled.

         “That’s Star Trek, right?” Andrew turned to see Urd watching them. “I loved pre-war media. That was the favorite quote of Captain Picard.”

         “Good afternoon, Urd.” Andrew glanced at Cristina. “Where’d she come from?”

         “I’ve been waiting for you to finish before interrupting.” Urd explained, stepping around the various piles of equipment that littered the ground. “I’m sorry if I am intruding.”

         “She’s been waiting for a few minutes.” Cristina added. “I noticed her teleport in.”

         “I am curious,” Urd stopped in front of him, “how did you recognize me? Even our close friends have issues sometimes telling my sisters and I apart.”

         “Even though you all hide your tattoos, your eyes are still different colors.” Andrew explained. “Yours are a very nice shade of purple.”

         Urd’s smile lit up her face. “That is a very kind thing of you to say. Thank you.”

         “You’re welcome.” Andrew frowned. “Why are you here, if I may ask? I didn’t think I had attracted the attention of the Celestial Alliance.”

         “No. Simply drawing the attention of the Alliance isn’t what brought us to your wedding.” She appraised him. “No, you have attracted our attention specifically, Mr. Ranger.”

         “It’s Andrew.” Andrew chuckled. “This is the part where I’m supposed to joke that Mr. Ranger was my father, but that would be a lie.”

         “Then Andrew, the reason why I am here is rather simple.” She nodded at Cristina. “I wish to be your friend.”

         Andrew and Cristina shared a look. “What reason would someone like you have to be friends with someone like me?” He asked.

         Urd cocked her head. “Even if for no other reason, you have many Celestials in your harem. That makes you a man worth getting to know.”

         “Being a Celestial tamer would be a reason for the Alliance to get to know me.” Andrew pointed out. “By your own admission, it isn’t the Alliance that came to celebrate my marriage. It isn’t the Alliance that is here today. It’s you.”

         Urd was smiling as he explained his reasoning. “You are very astute. Another reason is because we are friends with Iain, and so are you. I don’t see why friends of friends can not be friends.”

         “If that was all it was, you could have gotten my number from him and made your presence known at any time.” Andrew watched Urd begin giggling to herself. “Am I being tested?”

         “Perhaps.” She teased. “Will you be busy for much longer? I would like to invite you to lunch with my sisters. To get to know each other. As friends.”

         Something in the way she asked was off and Andrew had a feeling he knew what it was. “May I invite a few of my family as well? Cristina especially would love to get to know you.”

         Urd looked shocked. “Of course! I would love to spend some time talking with all of you.”

         “We should go get cleaned up, then.” Andrew pointed. “There’s a nice outdoor cafe a few blocks that way. How about we meet for a late lunch there in about an hour?”

         Urd bobbed her head. “I know of the place. We will see you then, Andrew.” She smiled and vanished.

         Cristina glanced at him. “You’re nervous. Speak.”

         “Other than the fact I’m supposedly interesting to the leaders of one of the burgeoning political powers of this world?” Andrew asked wryly. “I think she’s trying to get in my pants.”

         Cristina blinked, turning to where Urd had been standing with a thoughtful look on her face. “Is that so.”

         Andrew’s heart sank. “You’re not outraged.”

         Cristina glanced back at him with a small smile. “It shows she has good taste.”

         “Do you really want more pokegirls around me?” Andrew asked desperately. “It’s hard enough making sure everyone has time with me now.”

         “And yet you manage while still finding time for yourself.” Cristina replied gently. “I do not especially want any more women in your life, no, but I will not hate those who want to share the love you give to me.”

         “Bloody celestials.”

         “Contrary to popular belief, we’re not all virgins.” Cristina giggled.

         Andrew just sighed and let her take his hand to teleport.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
         Belldandy rose. “Here he is!”
         Skuld and Urd followed suit, all three calling greetings to the three walking towards them. Andrew smiled and waved back. “Hello! You’ve already met Cristina, but there was someone else who wanted to meet you.”
         Belldandy embraced Cristina before turning to Camiel. “And good afternoon. I believe I saw you at the wedding. Weren’t you walking Cristina down the aisle?”
         Camiel nodded, declining Belldandy’s extended arms. “I would like to introduce myself before you pry into my life.” She smiled when all three Megami-Sama looked guilty. “Yes, I know what your breed enjoys doing. I can’t say I’ve ever had reason to meet you three before today, however.”
         Belldandy shook her head. “No, I can’t say we’ve met. I am Belldandy, and these are my sisters Urd and Skuld.”
         “And I am Camiel.”
         Skuld’s head shot around to look at her. “Camiel?”
         “That’s right.”
         “Have you heard of her, Skuld?” Belldandy asked curiously.
         Skuld and Urd both nodded. “She is the one I warned you about, Bell.” Urd said quietly.
         Belldandy looked thoughtful for a moment before her eyes widened. “Oh. You are-“ she visibly stopped herself from continuing, choosing her next words carefully. “I only ever heard rumors, of a holy reaper.”
         Camiel nodded. “That is I. I was tasked with bringing judgment to the betrayers.” She smiled when Belldandy gulped. “I do not serve the creator any longer, Belldandy. No more than you or your sisters do. I serve Andrew.”
         “If that is what you were meant to do, you must know Lucifer.” Belldandy replied, her voice small. “She is the reason we have done what we have.”
         Camiel pursed her lips. “Must we talk of these things? Those days are gone.”
         “I must know if you mean her harm.” Belldandy raised her head high. “She is a friend.”
         “I don’t know if the truth will be pleasant for you.” Camiel replied. “Can I say that she did not fall by my hand, and leave it at that?”
         “She must know.” Skuld replied, reaching out to hold Belldandy’s hand. “Since you won’t let her see for herself.”
         Camiel gazed at Belldandy’s resolute face. “I was never tasked with judging Lucifer. She had left the armies, for one, and also because the creator wished for her to die in obscurity. He did not want her to become a martyr, falling by my hand. That is why he sent the Hunters instead. I hold no animosity towards her, or to you who follow her ideals.” She extended and arm, waiting for Belldandy to react before embracing the Megami-Sama. “Besides. I have come to learn that she was correct, just as you have.”
         Belldandy was quiet until Camiel released her. “You did not enjoy what you did.”
         Camiel shook her head slightly. “It was necessary, or so I believed, but no. I did not.”
         Skuld extended her arms next, wincing when Camiel hugged her. “The pain you carry.”
         “Reminds me of what I must do to atone.” Camiel replied. “What we all must do.”
         Urd took her turn next, kissing Camiel’s cheek. “It is our pleasure to meet you, Camiel. Andrew seems to have captured the hearts of two extraordinary celestials.”
         “He has.” Cristina glanced at Camiel with a smile. “He saved us both.”
         The three Megami looked at each other. “I believe this is a story we would like to hear.” Belldandy said.
         “Let’s order some food and we will be glad to share while we wait.” Cristina grinned.
         Andrew took his seat, flanked by Cristina and Camiel while the Megami sat across from them. “Please, elaborate.” Skuld said eagerly once their waiter had come and gone.
         “Would you like to hear Cristina’s story first, or Camiel’s?” Andrew asked.
         “How about the story of how you met your beautiful wife?” Belldandy teased.
         Cristina blushed, looking at Andrew. “It’s not very romantic. I was still hurting, and took an evil deal that required me to get close to him.”
         “Cristina was originally meant to betray me to my enemies.” Andrew explained, reaching over to stroke her hair. “To break her vows, in a way. Funnily, she managed to stay true to both her promises in the end.”
         Cristina looked confused so he explained. “You kept your promise to the bitch, and once you had you kept yours to me.”
         Cristina nodded slowly. “I see. I had never thought about that.”
         “But how did he save you?” Urd asked curiously.
         Cristina took a deep breath. “To explain this takes some backstory. I’m not from this world.”
         “Yes, you’re from the world Iain calls ‘Four’, correct?” Urd giggled when Cristina and Andrew both looked shocked. “He’s explained to us how there are various alternate universes. Are you from the same one he is, Andrew?”
         Andrew shook his head. “It’s possible, but highly doubtful. See, before I got pulled across I was reading the stories he, or a version of him, was writing. One of them detailed him being pulled into Four. So, it’s basically impossible that I met the same Iain that existed in my universe.” He shrugged. “Of course, the story never continued after the second part and a bit, when Iain escaped Four to travel here. There are a whole bunch of things we can theorize about what happened there, but I won’t. What matters is that once I was on Four, I was temporally shifted to after the story I had read had occurred.” He glanced at the mixture of confusion and rapt attention on the faces in front of him. “Everything I had read had happened in Four already. It’s how I knew enough to catch that version of Iain’s attention.”
         “So you’re probably from a completely different universe than he is.” Urd mused.
         “It’s all but certain.”
         “That is fascinating.”
         “Yea, well, it doesn’t exactly bode well for me.” Andrew chuckled. “That means there’s a version of me out there detailing my misadventures.”
         “Huh.” Skuld glanced at Belldandy. “That’s a bit unnerving.”
         “I try not to think about it too much.” Andrew smiled. “Getting back on track. Cristina?”
         “Right.” Cristina looked around. “So, I’m from Four, three hundred years into the future. That’s important, because I am the child of an Archangel who fought in the war. A Paragon Archangel.” She glanced to her side. “An Archangel named Camiel.”
         Skuld was the only one who let the shock reach her face but none of the listeners interrupted when Cristina kept talking. “I grew up with her training me ever since I could hold a sword. At the time I didn’t really know why, but it made me a pretty good fighter. So when my mother was killed, I reacted to it a bit more... violently, than I probably should have.”
         She took a steadying breath. “I never found the killer. It ate away at me, every day. And one day I had had enough. I was an Angel at that point but I... I betrayed my Master. I fell. And the Infernal that helped me marked me so I’d remember what I’d done.” She gestured at her black eyes. “I tried to ignore my sin, to use my new power to hunt as I had before, but I couldn’t hide from myself. Eventually I realized in my relentless hate I had done something unforgivable. So I went back to the one that had given me her dark mark, and I forced her to take it back.”
         “But you still hold it.” Belldandy said, a hint of confusion to her voice.
         “I’m getting to that.”
         Belldandy blushed and waved for her to continue.
         “At this point it’s obvious I was no longer worthy of any trust or love.” Cristina said quietly. “I didn’t think I was and I expected none. So when, on one of my travels, I found a man who treated me as if I wasn’t a disgusting, ugly, evil thing, I thought he was a lie.” Belldandy glanced at Andrew but he shook his head. “I thought I was so smart realizing it. He had an Infernal too. He couldn’t be what he appeared. So I thought.”
         Cristina felt Andrew take her hand and she squeezed it for a few seconds before continuing. “I don’t know why exactly I finally struck out. I think I was so convinced that he had to be evil, that I didn’t want him to trick another girl. But I failed, thankfully. His Infernal protected him, struck me down. She held my life in her hands and they spared me. He told me he understood why I did it, and he forgave me. Unconditionally. He wasn’t evil. He was simply accepting, to all of us. That’s when I evolved. When I realized that even when I was so broken, so terribly ruined, there could still be someone out there who understood.”
         She didn’t speak for almost a minute and Belldandy kept making abortive gestures until she looked up across the table. “I stayed with him for over a decade. Until the day when we got in over our heads hunting something we had no business looking for. He died that day, along with my sisters. But as her last act, the Infernal who had once held my life in her hands gave me the power to avenge them. I held her broken body in my arms and begged her to do it. She refused so many times. She knew what would happen if she gave me her blessing. I’d told them all my story, fragments of it, over the years. Finally I promised her I wouldn’t go back to what I had been and she used the last of her strength to once again make me Infernal. I slaughtered the thing that had killed them and struck out again. But my promise had been hollow; I was consumed again with hatred. Twice I had had my greatest joy ripped away from me. I swore there would not be the chance for a third.”
         “So you see,” Andrew murmured when Cristina turned and pressed her face against his arm, “the woman I met was deeply troubled.”
         “How did you save her?”
         Andrew glanced at Cristina, waiting to see if she would respond. When she didn’t move he spoke. “At some point after that, Cristina struck a deal with my enemies. I assume to cleanse her again so she could try to forge a better path, but that is something she has never shared, even to me. For her side of the deal she was supposed to get close to me, to bring me to a place where they could capture me again. She did. But what my enemies hadn’t counted on was what I would do for her. Was I like the man who evolved you to Ophanim?” Cristina nodded. “Lightning struck twice and she decided that there would be a third time.”
         “There won’t.” Cristina replied firmly, pulling away and staring up at him. “The third time would be if I lose you too. I will die before that happens, and I will take every single possible threat to your life with me so that the third time will never happen. I will block you from crossing the gates of hell until my soul has been utterly erased from all memory. Only then will you be able to die, because I will no longer be there to stop you.”
         “And if that should happen, you won’t be blocking me from beyond.” Andrew said quietly. “Because I will not rest until I have brought you back to live at my side.”
         “And that,” Camiel said, smiling at the two, “is her story. Mine is not quite as intense, but I hope to one day experience the same as she has.”
         Belldandy had been holding her hands over her mouth and finally lowered them. “Thank you for sharing with us.”
         “Camiel still struggles with her sins from the war.” Andrew replied, Cristina at this point having climbed into his lap where she quietly held him close. “Cristina asked me to save her one day, even though she isn’t truly her own mother. I accepted, and eventually I am sure I will be able to help her accept who she is, and not just what she has done.”
         “You already have.” Camiel replied. “Not like her, no. I already know I will never share with you what she does. It wouldn’t be right. But we will forge our own path, yes?”
         “That’s right.”
         “If the children of the Alliance heard of you, you would be buried in hurting pokegirls.” Skuld said with whispered awe. “How have you not already?”
         “Well, I keep to myself mostly.” Andrew replied. “I don’t really go out in public anymore - at least, not as myself. After all, when I revealed myself the last time, three Celestials flocked right in.”
         “What happened with them?” Skuld asked curiously even as Urd reddened.
         “I went out to lunch with them.”
         Urd had covered her glowing face with her hands and Skuld’s face quickly gained the same shade. She glanced at Belldandy but the other Megami was holding a similar expression. “Um.”
         “The ‘children of the Alliance’ aren’t ever going to find out about me, are they?” Andrew asked with a small grin. “Not until their leaders have had their chance first.”
         Cristina slid back off his lap, looking at the embarrassed Megami with barely concealed glee. “Look at them squirm. You were right.”
         “Of course I was.” Andrew snickered. “Ladies, if you’re debating whether the failure of your subterfuge has ruined your chance, let me be honest with you.” He paused when their waiter appeared, passing out plates and vanishing again. “There is a long list of qualifications that I require before I’ll consider sleeping with someone. That list has only grown longer since coming to this world, and some of the things are outside of your control.”
         “What kind of things?” Belldandy asked in a very small voice.
         “I expect my partners to be exactly that. Partners.” Andrew explained. “If I can’t give them the time they deserve, and if they can’t do the same for me, it’s never going to work. Right now I’m already spread thin. I don’t think I can give you three the time you deserve, so you might be better off finding someone who can.”
         “What else?”
         “Well, you three do meet some of the qualifications.” Andrew mused.
         Urd scrubbed at her face. “Like what?”
         “You’re just going to hide again.”
         Urd glared at him. “I will not!”
         “You’re nearly identical triplets. I’ve had sex with twins before, and you’re all attractive enough that I’ve already fantasized a bit about what a foursome would be like.” Andrew grinned when Urd’s hands twitched. “However, I was asked here today to get to know you all. Not mortify you with my fantasies.”
         Something passed between the three and Skuld took a deep breath. “That’s correct. First and foremost, we will need to be friends before any other items on this list of yours can be considered.”
         “That’s item one.” Andrew replied with a smile. “I am Cristina’s best friend, and she is mine, just as I am Camiel’s and vice versa. Now, we should eat before our food gets cold.”
         The sentries looked up when a figure flew overhead. One was starting to raise the alarm when the early morning light shone off the black wings and she recognized the visitor. “CAMIEL HAS RETURNED!” She watched another form flit by after the Archangel, eyes widening when she saw what it carried.
         Cristina winged in after Camiel, waiting for Andrew to unbuckle before releasing the harness and stashing it away. “It’s strange to see this many pokegirls here.”
         Camiel glanced back at them. “Didn’t I say she had attracted more?”
         “Sure, but it’s still strange.” Cristina giggled.
         “Your confidence in Drifa’s abilities is astounding.” Came the dry response.
         Camiel led them to a small ramshackle hut where a towering dragon pokegirl stood. The Frostwyrm took one look at the group and shifted, her tail and body covering most of the entrance. “Identify.”
         “Camiel, bringing three guests.”
         The girl gazed down at them. “I see two.”
         “I bring one who is still in her pokeball.” Andrew explained. “Would you like to see her?”
         “No hidden. Bring out the third.”
         Andrew released Ann. “Here she is.”
         The Frostwyrm nodded, lifting her tail. “Enter.”
         Camiel stepped in first, the others trailing behind. As soon as Cristina had brought up the rear the Frostwyrm shifted to fully cover the door.
         Andrew blinked to adjust his eyes, looking at where Drifa and Camiel were embracing. The Snow Queen broke free after a moment, stepping towards him with a sultry smile. “Good morning, Master Andrew. It’s good to see you again.”
         “And it’s nice to see you too.” Andrew replied, stepping into her embrace so she couldn’t try anything. “You look well.”
         Drifa stepped back when he did. “Thank you. The last few weeks have been harrowing, but we survive.” Her uniform was wrinkled, but in good condition; it was obvious she took very careful care of it. “Please, sit. Has Camiel explained what has happened?”
         “Vaguely.” Andrew replied, taking his seat and waiting for the others to do the same. “I noticed you’ve made it to the north end of the range.”
         “We stopped when we saw signs of the human towns you mentioned.” Drifa replied. “The last few days were tougher as we made time, so the girls are enjoying the short rest.”
         “Well, they may need that rest.” Andrew chuckled. “We did a quick survey before coming here. The ruins are infested with ferals.”
         Drifa shrugged. “All the more to bolster my forces.”
         “Maybe. If you add them, you will need to find tamers for some. They are not all Ice Maidens.”
         “Once they are awoken, we can keep them awake.” Drifa replied, watching him carefully.
         “Then you’d only need to find tamers to do that. Unfortunately, some would likely run off; and then you’d have humans who knew where you were.”
         Drifa scowled. “You would not do it?”
         “I do not have casual sex, Drifa. If I tamed them I’d expect them to join my harem. That would be unfair to you.”
         “And I’d never allow it.” Cristina muttered.
         “It’s not happening.” Andrew said firmly.
         Drifa growled but nodded. “I understand. I would not want you to take Qusi, so I understand.”
         “Was that her at the door?” Andrew glanced back but could only see a wall of blue scales. “I didn’t even recognize her.”
         “Yes.”
         Andrew waited for her to elaborate and continued when she didn’t. “If you can clear the ruins, they should provide a lot of building materials. If you want to settle here, it should be relatively simple.”
         “I’m tired of running.” Drifa replied. “But I also do not want to be forced to flee if humans discover me again. Are there any more of them nearby?”
         “There shouldn’t be.” Andrew replied. “All the towns on this side of the mountains were so small they likely have been wiped out by now. If not, they’re not strong enough to bother you. They may even be willing to trade.”
         “If they exist, we will not touch them.” Drifa snarled.
         Andrew watched her. “What happened?”
         “I believed she was still of her own will. I was wrong.” Drifa shook her head. “I allowed my forces to enter the human towns, to seek out love just as I had found. The ones they found wanted more. They came for us in the night. I was forced to strike down the ones I protected.” She stared at him. “Humans turned us against each other. The only thing that protected me from them was you.”
         “I wasn’t even there.”
         “No, but your love gave me the strength I needed to defend those still loyal to me.” Drifa replied. “And now you come to bolster me again.”
         “I guess I do.” Andrew glanced at where Ann was sitting silently. “Ann, can you please introduce yourself?”
         Ann glanced up. “Ah. Hello. I’m Ann, and it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
         Drifa smiled. “It’s my pleasure, Ann. I am Drifa. In the excitement I did not welcome you and I apologize.”
         Ann brightened. “That’s alright. You all were talking so I didn’t want to interrupt.”
         “Once you take the ruins and begin building, Ann will act as your point of contact with me.” Andrew explained. “She has agreed to be my ambassador to you.”
         Drifa glanced at the Ice Empress. “How will this be?”
         “It will take some time for you to rebuild.” Andrew looked between the two. “While you are, Ann will be practicing teleportation so that eventually she can act both as ambassador and courier for any supplies you may need. Like food.”
         Drifa’s eyebrows rose. “You believe the alliance I asked for is possible?”
         “It’s more than possible. Kuu is waiting with the first delivery right now.”
         Drifa gazed at him. “Then why is she not here to negotiate?”
         “Because there is no negotiation.” Andrew smiled. “You are her harem sister, though the two of you have never met. What’s hers is yours.”
         Drifa’s expression flickered in confusion. “She would freely give away what is hers?”
         “That’s not what she’s doing.” Andrew replied gently. “You’re in need, and she has the means to help. So she is.”
         “I can’t accept this. It wouldn’t be correct.”
         “You think accepting her aid puts you under her. That it’s a trick.”
         Drifa started. “How did you-?”
         “Because she told me you might think that.” Andrew chuckled. “That is why she authorized me to negotiate on her behalf.”
         Drifa stared. “A Queen would send a man to do her will? This I did not expect.”
         “She did ask that I do it in private, so that the deal remains between the two of you.” Andrew glanced at the others. “Ann, you should start meeting the pokegirls here. You’ll be seeing them more often than I will.”
         Ann nodded. “That’s a good idea. Camiel, can you help me? I don’t know anyone yet.”
         Camiel nodded and rose with the Ice Empress. “My pleasure.”
         Cristina watched them leave. “Why did she ask you to do it in private?”
         Andrew smirked. “Because I’ve been sent due to my special negotiating tools.”
         Cristina looked confused for a moment before she realized what he was saying. “Oh. I, uh, I’ll go talk with Qusi.”
         Drifa watched her leave. “What tools could you possibly have that she does not?”
         Andrew smiled. “I’ll show them if I have to use them. First, I’d like to outline her offer and her price.”
         Drifa scowled. “Speak.”
         “Queen Kuu offers today to help feed your people until such a time where you can care for yourself; she also extends a formal invitation to visit her court and meet her to draft articles of defense between your two peoples.”
         “And her price for this aid?”
         “That you accept her invitation.”
         Drifa stared at him. “That can’t be all.”
         “That is the extent that I was told to demand.”
         “What if I accept this invitation and no agreement is reached?”
         “It is my understanding that the price is only that you visit. If the meeting does not end in an agreement, the price has already been paid.” Andrew replied.
         Drifa slowly stood, walking away and staring at the wall. “That is far too low a price to pay.”
         “I have demanded all she asked.”
         “I am aware.” Drifa continued staring at the jagged, woven branches for a few moments. “Will she accept my own emissary in her court? An exchange of ambassadors would be a fitting price for this alliance.”
         Andrew refrained from pointing out that Ann was his ambassador and just nodded. “As I am authorized to accept on Queen Kuu’s behalf, I accept your offer. Who is to be your emissary?”
         Drifa chuckled to herself. “I will have to decide. She will come with me when I visit so as to uphold both parts of my bargain.”
         “Then it is settled.” Andrew smiled. “The first shipment will arrive as soon as Camiel returns for it. Once Ann can make the trip she will become your courier.”
         “Agreed.” Drifa sighed and looked back at him. “What would you have done if I had refused? What are these special tools?”
         “I didn’t have to use them so it doesn’t matter.”
         Drifa stepped back towards him. “I would like to know.”
         “You’re sure? They can be pretty intense.” Andrew snickered.
         Drifa glared at him. “Tell me!” She blinked in confusion when he pulled off his shirt. “What?”
         Andrew grinned and lunged forwards, sweeping her up in a kiss. Eventually he pulled back, gazing into her lust-filled eyes. She shivered when he leaned in and whispered in her ear. “Let’s get that uniform off and I can show you just how intense they get.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

         Andrew was still giggling to himself when Ann sat down next to him. “Did it go well?”

         He nodded. “Drifa is very happy with how the negotiations concluded.”

         “I could hear that.” Ann smiled to herself and turned her attention back to the two circling figures ahead of them. “Did you tell her we were going to do this?”

         “I did not and we will not. She has to believe she conquered her land herself.”

         Ann nodded slightly, watching Camiel dive again when she found a new feral. “There will still be some resistance, right?”

         “We’re leaving as many of the Ice Maiden line as we can. The other ice pokegirls are being evaluated on a case by case basis. If they might pose a threat, they go down.”

         Ann gazed out over the quiet tundra. “Thank you.”

         “You’re welcome.”

         “You don’t even know what I’m thanking you for.”

         “Sure I do.” Andrew reached out to draw her into a sideways hug. “You’re thanking me for not throwing you away. It was the scariest outcome you could think of from your resignation. When nothing happened you started getting more and more worried, waiting for the shoe to drop. It never did. And it never will.”

         Ann nodded. “I couldn’t bear to think you’d push me away.”

         “Do you still remember how we met?”

         Ann smiled to herself. “I thought I had screwed up then, too.”

         “Yea. Who were you looking for, by the way? I’m curious.”

         “It doesn’t matter.” Ann wrapped her own arm around him, snuggling close. “I found you. That’s all that matters. Even if I’m not fighting with you I know you’ll still come home to me.”

         “You do know I expect everyone to at least be combat ready. Including the ones who have chosen not to actively fight.” Andrew cautioned.

         Ann nodded. “I know. And one day I’ll reach a point where I can fight effectively. But for now I’m doing something that I can strive for without holding anyone else back.”

         They both looked up when the angels turned back, flying in and landing in front of them. “Twenty seven dangerous ferals.” Cristina reported, dropping a bag. “If there are any more hiding out there, they didn’t come out at the challenge.”

         “How long does she have?”

         “The other town across the river might hold more.” Cristina replied. “Actually it probably does hold more, but with luck they won’t stray this way for a while. Not until Drifa has set up enough to repel them.”

         “That’s good.” Andrew stood. “Ready to head back?”

         Cristina nodded and reached out but Camiel intercepted her. “Go back alone, daughter. I’ll take both Ann and Andrew back together so Ann can experience a long range teleport.”

         Cristina blinked. “You can-? Sorry, of course you can. It’ll take me two jumps but I’ll make it.” She chuckled and vanished after grabbing her bag again.

         Camiel took their arms. “Ann, I know you haven’t successfully teleported at all yet, so first I want you to feel what I do.”

         Ann nodded, waiting as Camiel gathered power. “That’s a lot less energy than I expected.”

         “Your first few times you will be forcing your way to where you want to go.” Camiel explained. “As you learn you will realize that you are not going somewhere; you are returning there. All you need to do is return to the location you experienced. It gets trickier with passengers, because you are taking them with you and so can’t simply return alone, but over time you will learn how to lessen that as well.” She teleported, releasing them and gesturing at the green forest around them. “Like so.”

         Andrew yelped when the temperature around them shot from near freezing to baking and back to near freezing until Ann remembered to control her temperature again. “I’m getting parboiled over here.”

         Camiel chuckled. “I’m sure you’ll be fine. Now, I have to find Kuu and take her delivery back to Drifa.”

         “Try not to kill yourself.”

         Camiel smiled at his worry. “Thank you, but I know my limits. I’ll rest up north before coming back.”

         Andrew nodded and turned to Ann. “How are you feeling?”

         Ann had a strange look on her face. “I think I understand what I was missing. I should be able to teleport soon.”

         “That’s excellent.” Andrew laughed, hugging her. “Probably not that far yet though.”

         Ann giggled. “No, but eventually. I’ll practice every day until I can.” She kissed his cheek. “Thank you again. It means so much to me to be doing something important.”

         Andrew returned the favor and the two stood together for a few minutes before Ann took his hand and began pulling him back to the caves.

         “Hey!” Andrew continued wiping his face as Cristina ran up. “Good job today.”

         “You’re joking, right? You know how people talk about a competitive drive?” He flung the towel at the wall. “You’ve upgraded theirs into a competitive fucking overdrive. I was eating dust all morning.”

         “You still improved your time.” She pointed out.

         “And I lagged behind Constance. The lumbering steel type. I’m pissed.”

         Cristina grinned. “Good. That will help you improve.”

         “Why are you bugging me.” Andrew sighed. “I just want to rest for a bit. Get some breakfast.”

         “Because it’s been a few weeks since the wedding and everything that cascaded afterwards. We need to have a command meeting.”

         Andrew raised an eyebrow. “You’re calling a command meeting? I’m usually the one that has to do that.”

         “As acting Alpha, I figure it’s time for one. There have been some developments to talk about.”

         Andrew beamed. “You’re sure you won’t take the job permanently?”

         “No.” Cristina laughed. “Fifteen minute notice. That’s the precedent. You’ve got fifteen minutes to report to the meeting room.”

         Andrew threw an exaggerated salute. “Yes ma’am!”

         Cristina chuckled and left him to quickly strip and dash to the shower.

         Ten minutes later he walked into the room, noticing how unlike the meeting he had called before the table was already full before the deadline. Cristina nodded when he took his seat, looking around at the depleted group. “Alright. Thank you all for joining me today. Andrew, good job. Now you know how it felt last time.”

         Andrew glanced around, still air drying. “None of you are- oh, come on. Was this payback?” The giggles he received told him the answer. “You’re all so dead.”

         “I think we’ll start with a quick role call.” Cristina said with a grin. “Beta, training officer, and acting Alpha Cristina is present. Logistics coordinator Lyn?”

         “Present.”

         “Medical officer Gale?”

         “Yo.”

         “Patrol and defense captain Kuu?”

         “Present.”

         “And Andrew.” Cristina finished. “Good.”

         “Hold on.” Andrew chuckled. “Don’t I get a title?”

         “Husband?” Cristina smirked. “Does that work?”

         “I’ll work with it.” Andrew waggled his eyebrows at Kuu. “I’m planning to conquer at least half of this command that way.” He grinned at their resigned sighs. “Where’s Cortney and Rein?”

         “Cortney has been restructured under Lyn, and Rein has been restructured under Gale.” Cristina replied. “I would like to pass at least one of my duties as well, but nobody else has volunteered as training officer, and you have not promoted a new Alpha as of yet.”

         “Fair enough.”

         “I’ll start by setting a clock for that.” Cristina beamed at him. “I’m pregnant.”

         Andrew laughed, starting to stand before collapsing back and just grinning at her. “You’re sure?”

         “I scanned her yesterday.” Gale said with a smile. “She is undoubtedly pregnant. From the rumor she started, I’d be dumbfounded if she wasn’t.”

         “That’s wonderful.” Andrew’s smile faded slightly. “How many months until you have to slow down?”

         “Five months at the most.” Gale replied. “I’d prefer if she started slowing down in about four. She’ll still be mobile until the birth as far as I’m aware, but no more strenuous activity after five months. This is her first time. I’d rather play it safe.”

         “I agree.” Andrew sighed. “I have four months to figure out an Alpha.”

         “More like two.” Cristina amended. “I’ll need to train her before I have to stop fighting.”

         “Two.” Andrew winced.

         “I hope you have a candidate in mind.”

         “I’ve got a few.” Andrew grumbled. “Alright. What else?”

         “Ann made her first solo trip two days ago.” Lyn spoke up. “It took her about an hour and over a dozen jumps but she did it. As she gets better at teleporting she’ll be able to cut that down. Drifa wants to visit sometime in the next month as well; Snowmelt Town is growing and she is ready to fulfill her end of the agreement.”

         “Snowmelt Town? They named it?”

         “They sure did.” Lyn chuckled. “It’s a real place now. Buildings and such everywhere.”

         “That’s something you need to think about, Kuu.” Andrew nodded at the ElfQueen. “What else?”

         “You’ve received another three separate invitations to a list of social and private functions.” Lyn continued. “One signed by Belldandy, one by Skuld, and one by...”

         “Let me guess. Urd.”

         “Bingo.”

         “They’re not giving up, are they?”

         “I wouldn’t if I were them.” Cristina replied. “You basically told them at that lunch that you want to sleep with them, and have been talking with them ever since. At this point they’re trying to sound out your list of requirements.”

         “Serious question.” Andrew looked around. “Should I even be flirting with them? That’s three more pokegirls. Do we have room for them?”

         “I believe this is my answer.” Cristina replied. “As your training officer I welcome their strength to my family. As your Beta I want nothing to do with them and nothing to do with ANY other pokegirl that would take up more of your time.” She gave him a small smile. “But as your Celestial, I beg you to save them just as you saved me. They are hurting women just as I was. They need you, Andrew. If not you someone exactly like you, who we both know doesn’t exist on this world.”

         “Sounds like it’s two to one.”

         “The ultimate choice is yours.” Cristina replied gently. “If you decide they belong with us, the votes say they will be welcomed here.”

         “A choice I will need more time and data to make.” Andrew shrugged. “I’ll see if any of the things they’ve invited me to interest me and go from there. Next?”

         “I’m taking over your personal training for the foreseeable future.” Gale grinned when Andrew groaned. “Fu says you’re at a point where you need more practice, not more knowledge. That means I get to poke and prod and do what I’ve been waiting for for weeks.”

         “Great.”

         “We’ll have some fun with it.” Gale taunted. “Or I will.”

         “Please tell me there’s something else I can look forward to.” Andrew groaned.

         “There are a couple things we could do that are considered work.” Kuu supplied. “Lyn has the details but I know I’ve seen some signs to the north.”

         “I didn’t want to mention them until we’d taken care of some of the other things we’re worrying about.” Lyn replied. “We’ve still got our equipment in India after all.”

         “I’m pretty sure that outpost has been reclaimed by the ferals at this point.” Andrew replied. “We didn’t leave anything important anyways. Just raw materials. What’s going on?”

         “The civilians in Carlsbad are playing keepaway with the local garrison. Military forces tried appropriating all farmland that they had been cultivating and it got ugly when they discovered that the farmers had been hiding pokegirls. A couple elves were a part of that group and that’s how it came to my attention.” Kuu explained. “Right now there are about a dozen pokegirls and five humans hiding in the wilds while the military has been forced to retreat to quell the unrest from the general populace. Funnily enough, when you interrupt someone’s food supply, they get pretty upset.”

         “What kind of pokegirls do the farmers have?”

         “Confirmed four Elves, seven Milktit, and an Ivywhore.”

         “I’m astonished they managed to actually find agricultural pokegirls.” Andrew said in respect. “But no real combat ones which is why they couldn’t defend themselves.”

         “That and if they fought back the military would kill them.” Kuu pointed out. “Lyn would know more about the political situation. Cortney has been monitoring their communications.”

         “So you’re an intelligence officer too?” Andrew laughed.

         “Military logistics concern both our own operations and our enemy’s.” Lyn replied. “That was something Cortney was quick to point out when I tried to avoid the job.”

         “I’m impressed.” Andrew grinned. “So what’s the deal?”

         “The problem in Carlsbad is a side effect of a supply issue in Roswell.” Lyn explained. “The League was already siphoning food supplies from Carlsbad to feed the larger city, so when a few of their shipments mysteriously vanished with no trace, Roswell was left needing more. Apparently the commanding officer in Carlsbad decided that the pressure from his superiors meant he needed to crack down on the farmers who must be hiding the extra supplies he was demanding. He was right, in a way, but now he has zero production and angry shouting from all sides. The citizens have formed a provisional militia of their own which has already been successful in minor victories, though an informal ceasefire has been declared as both sides try to find enough food to keep themselves from starving.”

         “It’s a revolution.”

         “A very hungry one.”

         “That’s often how they start. When the elite starve the citizens until the citizens can take no more.” Andrew smiled to himself. “We can do something there. We can tip the scales for the rebels.”

         “That would mean going up against the League.”

         “Not if we play our cards right.” Andrew replied. “How long has this been going on?”

         “At least a month. The ceasefire was what caught our attention and it’s been in place for a week.”

         “And in that month, the League hasn’t mobilized a force to take back the town.” Andrew pointed out. “They can’t. For some reason they won’t move on this little rebellion.”

         “That may be because of the actions along Texas’ southern border.” Lyn mused. “Reports are spotty but it seems like the majority of Sunshine’s military is fortifying shallow positions along it.”

         “We are as far away from that as we can be.” Andrew said with an evil grin. “Any company trying to get here would need to go all the way around Texas land, past the mountain range, and south through Roswell. That’s too long for a sizeable chunk of Sunshine’s might to be out of action.”

         “It’s time?”

         “It’s time.” Andrew agreed. “I’m tired of working for the tyrants. It’s time we worked directly for the people.”

         “Constance ought to be happy with that.”

         “Not really.” Andrew shrugged. “We’re going for diplomacy first, after all. Once shots are fired it’s pretty hard to stop them from continuing until one side is dead.”

         “Agreed.” Lyn looked at Cristina. “Beta?”

         “Agreed.” Cristina replied. “With a vote of four in favor the motion is passed. I’ll put together a fireteam to-“

         “Respectfully,” Kuu interrupted, “I will put together a scout patrol and send them to where the farmers are hiding. It will be easier to make contact if elves are helping elves.”

         Cristina blinked but nodded. “Alright.”

         “I’ll keep you notified.” Kuu looked at both Andrew and Lyn. “Once I can arrange a meeting with the farmers I’ll either go myself or bring you along.”

         “What makes you believe they won’t try to capture you or your elves?”

         Kuu gave him a terrifying smile. “If they try, nobody will be able to find their remains. My laws are clear. An attack on my people is an attack on me; and an attack on me is punished by death.”

         The room was quiet until Kuu’s expression softened. “Besides, I can take care of myself.”

         Cristina shot a glance at the ElfQueen. “This meeting is adjourned. Andrew, good luck.” Gale immediately rose, grabbing him and pulling him out the door. “Kuu. Wait a moment, please.”

         Lyn gave them both a nod and left. “Yes?” Kuu asked curiously.

         Cristina was sizing her up. “A while ago you came to me and we had a talk. A talk about ages and experience. During that talk you told me you were around thirty years old.”

         “Actually I said I was in my late twenties.”

         Cristina frowned. “You also said you were younger than me.”

         Kuu sighed. “Alright, that one was a lie.”

         “Late twenties. Late twenty decades?”

         Kuu smiled. “Got me.”

         “Why hide that? If you’re this experienced I could have used your help.”

         “Because most of my life was spent as a feral Elf.” Kuu replied. “It’s only recently that I’ve had a chance to apply what I’ve seen. I’d be happy to be your advisor.”

         “We’re going to need you.”

         Kuu nodded. “I know. That’s why I’m here.”
