Chapter 20

Clouds on the Horizon

          Bea took a seat on the rock next to where Nicholas sat. “Everything okay, Master?”

          Nicholas gave the horizon a wry grin. “Oh, no. It never is, but we all keep going anyways.”

          Bea placed a comforting hand on his back. “Morgana told me what happened a few days ago.”

          “A few days ago? I learned that I’m too weak to make good use of this mega evolution thing,” Nicholas replied. “Nothing else happened.”

          Bea smiled hesitantly. “That’s… not what she told me, Master.”

          “Well it’s all I’m willing to say,” Nicholas retorted. “I can’t dwell on every little failure, Bea. I haven’t kept my promise to you lately, with whatever questions you have as my Alpha. I haven’t been taking care of Aria. I haven’t been… I haven’t been doing my job.” Air snorted out of his nose. “All because I can’t get over myself.”

          Bea looked out over the waterfall they were seated by. “I’ve been teaching myself. Aria hasn’t made any trouble in over a week. And you’ve certainly been doing your job. In fact, I’ve had to double up our taming schedule to keep up with you.” She smiled. “You’re confusing Elaine, you know. I don’t think you’ve played with her since then.”

          Nicholas released his clenched fists along with a long breath. “I need to stop chaining her down.”

          “Literally or figuratively?” Bea asked. “Because she likes it when you do it literally.”

          “Both,” Nicholas replied. “Her need for me to be in control is holding her back, it has to be. Reinforcing it with physical bondage can’t be helping.”

          “All I know is that Elaine is worried and confused,” Bea replied quietly. “Her Master has stopped treating her the way she wants. She’s waiting for you and you’re avoiding her.”

          “Bea you weren’t there,” Nicholas whispered. “Maybe Morgana told you but you weren’t there. You didn’t… You didn’t see who Elaine is.”

          “Maybe not. But I know what Elaine is now,” Bea retorted. “She needs her comfort. She needs the rough hand, the control, to chase away her fear. She needs her Master.” Bea got to her feet. “I understand that there was something special when you triggered her mega evolution. She did something special when you gave her power.” Bea held out her hand. “So give her power, Master. If it can’t be the same as before find a substitute. Keep moving forwards.” She smiled when he took her hand and let her pull him to his feet. “That’s a lesson you taught me.”

          Nicholas snorted. “Oh yeah? And when was that?”

          “When you named me.”

          Nicholas looked at her. Bea was staring back. “When I named you?”

          “You made something beautiful out of something I had always seen as ugly,” Bea replied softly. “You pulled me forwards and every step since then has helped me grow. Why is Elaine different?” She clasped his hands in hers. “She’s still in there, Master, this powerful Elaine Morgana saw. So pull.”

          Nicholas slowly nodded. “Thank you, Bea.”

          Bea cracked a smile. “It’s the Alpha’s duty to help her tamer just as much as her harem, right? I’m just doing my job.”

          “You really are.” Nicholas smiled back and let go. “I take it if you’re coming to find me the others are ready to move out?”

          Bea giggled and fell in behind him as he made his way back to where they had spent the night. “You guessed it, Master.”

          “How many more days until we reach Fortree?” Nicholas asked, entering the campsite and finding his bag. When Bea appeared behind him the pokegirls waiting around all scattered and Nicholas watched as they each took their traveling positions without an order. “Look what you’ve done to them.”

          Bea smirked and swung past him. “If we keep up our pace we should reach Fortree in four or five days, Master. Well, unless you take us on any detours.”

          “There’s basically nothing out here,” Nicholas replied. “We’ll be passing by the only thing in these woods, the Hoenn Weather Institute, sometime around lunch. Besides that it’s all wilderness.”

          “Then four or five days it is.”

          It was actually just after lunch when Nicholas saw the gleaming metal building peeking through the trees. They’d been slowed by another traveler who’d challenged Nicholas to a battle for fun. It had been a nice way to break up the monotony of the road but it had lost them over an hour.

          “Well. There it is,” Nicholas said as they broke through the trees. “The Hoenn Weather Institute.” He gazed up at the roof of the building for a few seconds, taking in the mess of equipment, before chuckling and continuing towards where the road passed over a nearby bridge. “This marks about the half-way point to Fortree, if I’m remembering correctly?”

          “Geographically we are two-thirds of the way to the city,” Kalmiya replied in his ear. “However, Master, the road beyond this point begins sloping heavily and slowing our pace as we enter the mountainous interior.”

          “Right. Hoenn and its mountains,” Nicholas grumbled. “Well it’s good to see a landmark.”

          He was passing by the front doors when Morgana noticed him come to a halt. Walking back with a frown she attempted to figure out what had caught his attention. “Master? Is something the matter?”

          Nicholas sighed. “Remind me. Marin’s somewhere in the river over there, Aria is above us, Bea’s in front, Elaine is covering our back.”

          Morgana blinked. “Yes, Master. Why?”

          “Because there’s a big ol’ Sharpedo staring at me from that building.”

          Morgana turned to the Weather Institute. Sure enough she could see the pokegirl in the window. “I see her, Master, but why ask? Did you think that was Marin?”

          “No, I just thought it rather odd to see a pokegirl like that in a scientific facility this far from the ocean,” Nicholas replied. “Call me paranoid, but I seem to remember a certain cult we’re looking for using pokegirls like that.”

          Morgana shot another glance at the building. “A detour, Master?”

          “Are we too far for you to do your mind-reading thing?”

          “I only read emotions, Master, not thoughts,” Morgana chided. “But… yes, we are quite some ways away.”

          “Kalmiya coordinate with the rest of the harem. I want our perimeter closing in.” Nicholas turned and meandered over towards the Weather Institute with Morgana next to him. “Tell me if you feel anything, Morgana.”

          They were just a few dozen feet away when morgana stiffened. “Master, stop.” Nicholas made a show of taking another look at the building as if he was just a tourist admiring the facility. “Master I am feeling a strong sense of fear from the second floor of this building.”

          “Strong how.” Nicholas kept his eyes on a weather vane while he talked. “One person strong, someone just got some bad news strong, explain.”

          “Half a dozen humans. Feeling genuine fear.”

          “I’ll assume then that these humans aren’t all just scared of a spider,” Nicholas replied grimly. “Wonderful.” He kept his eyes raised for a bit as he thought before a smile grew. “I have an idea.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
          The Sharpedo watched the human outside warily. He’d been scanning the building for a few minutes now but when he turned away she began to relax.
          “Remember. Wait a few seconds, then appear,” Nicholas said again for Marin’s benefit before sticking his thumb and forefinger into his mouth and sending a piercing whistle echoing through the forest.
          It was so loud that not only the watching Sharpedo, but a number of others within the building took notice as well. “What the hell?” a masked figure asked, peeking out to see the two figures outside. “Hey, Dusk! What’s going on out there?”
          “It looked like a passing Tamer,” the Sharpedo replied quickly. “I don’t know what he’s doing Master.”
          “Definitely whistling for something or someone,” the cultist replied, joined soon by two others and their pokegirls. “Hey, get ready!”
          Nicholas watched as Marin burst from the river, grinning as she landed already in her humanoid form and jogged to his side. “Hail Aqua,” she chuckled, flashing her teeth before calming and watching Nicholas recall Morgana. “I could just destroy them, you know.”
          “I’m planning on negotiating for the hostages,” Nicholas replied, waiting for her to settle down completely before turning towards the doors. “Remember. Draw their attention away from where the others will be coming in.”
          The Sharpedo inside jumped back when Nicholas casually flung open the doors and stepped inside with Marin behind him. “Afternoon. Where’s your Master?”
          “Who are you?” the girl countered.
          “Oh I was just passing by,” Nicholas replied breezily. “I get it, you’re the one on guard. Would you get your Master already? I don’t like speaking to pokegirls.”
          The Sharpedo growled at him but before she could make any moves Marin was in her face, the larger Sharpedo’s teeth glistening as she snarled. “My Master has spoken,” she spat, getting so close that the two Sharpedo’s chests were brushing up against one another as they bristled. “Fetch your Master, whelp.”
          “Dusk! Get back here.” The Aqua Sharpedo slunk back as the cultist came into view. “You there. You’re surrounded, so surrender before we have to hurt you.”
          “Me? Surrender?” Nicholas looked genuinely surprised at the cultist’s ultimatum. “Geez, I decide to drop in to see how things were going and this is the welcome I get? Who’s in charge here, anyways. I doubt Archie’d come all the way out here himself.”
          “Okay seriously, who are you?” The cultist asked. “You don’t look Aqua but you’re sure acting like it.”
          “Oh, the clothes?” Nicholas tapped his chest. “I’m one of our scouts. It’s infinitely easier to wander around without the usual uniform, you know? Even if a cop or ranger sees my Sharpedo there’s nothing wrong with having one if I’m not wearing our colors. I heard about our raid here and happened to be nearby so I figured I’d drop in.”
          The cultist grunted and motioned for his pokegirl to stand down. “What’s your name?”
          “Nick.”
          “Well Nick, we’re doing fine on our own so it’d be better if you left,” the cultist replied. “No offense but without any proof you’re just a passing tamer.”
          “Yeah, I guess that makes sense,” Nicholas replied with a shrug. “Hey, mind if I use the toilet here before I leave? I’d rather not have to piss on a tree.”
          “Well…” the cultist trailed off before shaking his head. “Yeah, sure. But you’re leaving your pokegirl here.”
          “I’ll do you one better,” Nicholas replied, unhooking his belt and handing it to Marin. “Marin, stay here while I go to the bathroom. And don’t make any trouble unless something happens.” His eyebrow rose for just an instant. “Got it?”
          Marin nodded. “Yes, Master.”
          “Good.” Nicholas turned back. He could see into the majority of the first floor now. Only three humans and three pokegirls, including the ones he had been speaking to. “Where is it? Near the middle of the building, where the others are?”
          “Oh, no, it’s over here,” the cultist replied. He was turning, leaving his Sharpedo to watch Marin, and the others were all keeping an eye on the human. None saw the shadows begin to grow in the windows behind them.
          Bea smashed through the glass, using her entire body as a battering ram to clear the opening and make a safe entry for the other two pokegirls behind her. She hit the ground and rolled, coming back to her feet a few moments after Aria and Elaine had each zeroed in on a target.
          The instant Bea broke the window Marin was moving. Dusk’s attention involuntarily moved to the sound of breaking glass, even as she watched Marin charging out of the corner of her eye, and so she was unable to defend before Marin reached her. With a savage roar Dusk was flipping through the air, crashing through a few tables before groaning and going limp.
          Her tamer met a similar fate thanks to being the closest one to Nicholas as the man grabbed him, spinning the shocked cultist around and slamming him to the ground. The man coughed, swinging his leg around in an attempt to fight back, before screaming when Nicholas slammed his fist into his stomach. Energy spat from Nicholas’ entire arm when he struck and the cultist spasmed before going still.
          The other two cultists were scrambling backwards, reaching for other pokeballs as their pokegirls were beaten down, when a figure rose in front of them. Bea grinned, shards of glass dropping from her skin like sharp rain. “Give me a reason.”
          Both men froze before slowly and carefully raising their hands above their heads.
          Marin moved to inspect Dusk’s body before spitting on the unconscious Sharpedo and rejoining Nicholas. “Your belt, Nicholas.”
          Nicholas accepted it and released Morgana. “Perfectly executed. Bea! Find the pokeballs for these three. And Morgana, put those cultists to sleep.”
          Morgana moved initially towards the cultist Nicholas had incapacitated before blinking in surprise. “This one is… already unconscious.” She frowned but moved onto the other two, ignoring their pleas as the two men slumped bonelessly to the floor. “What did you do to him, Master?”
          “Nothing important,” Nicholas replied. “Hey, hurry it up! I’m sure someone up above heard our entrance.” He moved to the marked stairs while Bea rounded up the fallen enemy pokegirls. “Marin, you’re on point. They should hesitate if they see a Sharpedo, use that to get close.”
          Marin laughed and began leaping up the stairs two at a time. “Got it.”
          “Hey! What’s going on down there?” Nicholas strolled up to the second floor as he listened to the shouts. “I asked you- hey, what are- HELP!”
          “Come on, come on!” Nicholas called behind him, laughing as he watched Bea and the others give chase.
          “Master, wait! It’s dangerous!” Bea threw herself up the stairs, straining to reach Nicholas before he could arrive at the second floor. “MASTER-!”
          Nicholas was still laughing as he stepped onto the next floor. As he took in Marin, tearing her way through the panicking cultists. As he saw the blast of water heading straight for his face.
          Bea screamed when she saw the attack engulf Nicholas’ head. She managed to make it another step up before her knees gave out and she crashed to the floor, staring in horrified disbelief at the scene in front of her. It had been less than a second since the attack had impacted but her mind ran so fast these days that it felt like longer. As if she had been watching her Master die for a minute or more.
          But then she saw a glow within the liquid.
          Steam exploded outwards, scattering the attack and engulfing the entire floor in a thick mist. The last pokegirl in the main area fell when a shadow flashed past and Marin straightened, keeping her eyes towards where a fortified group had been. “Damn it Elaine.”
          The Blaziken in question burst onto the scene seconds later, closely followed by Morgana and Aria. When she heard Marin growling she hesitantly raised her voice. “What did you say, um, Marin?”
          “I said damn it!” Marin roared back. “That fire of yours has made it impossible to see.”
          “But… I didn’t…”
          “MASTER!” Bea flung herself into the room, colliding with Nicholas’ body and dragging him down as she hysterically ran her hands all over his head. Nicholas was spluttering and he protested as Bea’s fingers jabbed into his nostrils and eyes more than once. “You… You were…”
          “Bea get OFF!” Bea squeaked when she felt the man underneath her shove her away and she was astonished to find herself actually sprawling backwards. He’d never been able to do that before.
          Nicholas rolled upright. He could feel his heart pounding and made his own inspection of his face, much more gently than Bea’s had been. He didn’t understand. He’d seen the water, felt the impact. And yet he didn’t feel a single break in his skin.
          Marin tsked when she heard shouting ahead of her. “Hey! Don’t you try to get away!” She waved her hand around to clear the fog as she tried to advance, snarling at the sound of breaking glass and a sudden gust of air blowing over her. “HEY!”
          “MARIN! Fall back!”
          The Sharpedo whirled at Nicholas’ call. “They’re getting away!”
          “If they’re running, let them,” Nicholas replied. “Find any hostages and protect them instead!”
          Marin swore but drifted away from where she could hear the voices fading, wading instead into the mist and calling out to offer aid.
          Nicholas blinked at where the rest of the harem stood. With Elaine here the heat from her body was burning off the fog around them, allowing him to see the others clearly. They all seemed confused and waiting for his next command. All except Bea.
          The Metang’s expression was frozen between horror and disbelief and Nicholas lowered his eyes, running a hand over his face once more. His was probably similar.
          “Master…”
          Nicholas got back to his feet. “Not now, Bea.” He gazed in Marin’s direction, listening as new voices began to swell from the remains of the chaos. “We need to make sure everything is cleaned up here, notify Steven. And then… we can talk about what just happened.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

          Steven watched the activity around the Weather Institute as he listened to Nicholas’ report. “The scientists you rescued say that the cult was demanding weather data from the eastern sea. That’s not good.”

          “Why’s that?”

          Steven glanced around to see if anyone was in earshot. “Well, let’s say you’re looking for ‘something’ that is rumored to control the weather. If you could find a pattern, some sort of point of origin for the storms in the region…”

          Nicholas slowly nodded. “I got it.”

          “I hate this,” Steven groaned. “You’ve been able to stumble across these cults more often than I can but we’re both still so far behind. We have no idea what they’re doing and why, or where they’ll show up next.”

          “Maybe we need to rethink our understanding,” Nicholas replied. When Steven turned to him questioningly Nicholas nodded at the building. “Like you said, that data could show a pattern. If that’s what Aqua’s after, why don’t we find it first?”

          Steven looked away. “Beat them to their goal.”

          “Exactly.”

          “The thought has crossed my mind,” Steven replied, “but I’ve been worried that we’d just be helping them. If we make that discovery first and there’s a spy, well, what was the point? And part of me still hopes that they won’t succeed. That even if they search for the rest of their lifetimes they won’t find what they’re looking for.”

          Nicholas nodded to himself. “I think we need to start treating these cults as if they know where Groudon and Kyogre are. Or have solid evidence to lead them in the right direction.”

          Steven turned back. “Is there a reason you believe that?”

          “There is.”

          Steven looked at him for a few seconds, waiting for Nicholas to elaborate. When he didn’t he nodded. “Okay. You’re the expert here, not me.”

          “I wouldn’t call myself an expert,” Nicholas protested.

          “Draconids are entwined with the legends of these pokegirls more tightly than anything else human,” Steven replied. “For some reason or another you, the Draconid who has agreed to help me, believe that this threat is more real and present than I had hoped. I’d be a fool to ignore that belief.” He sighed. “I’ll form teams immediately. Start analyzing the data Aqua was after. And the legends, too, anything we can to try and predict the cults’ next move.”

          Nicholas nodded. “What should I do?”

          “You’re best in the field.” Steven looked glum. “Damn. It’s been a while since I’ve been out here, too. I had a fleeting hope that I might get a chance to pursue my own interests for once.”

          Nicholas watched Steven pull out his pokedex and begin drafting a message. “Oh?”

          “It’s nothing, really. Rumors of ancient titans that once shaped the earth.” Steven chuckled. “Some of them supposedly slumber here, in Hoenn, in ancient tombs buried beneath the ground.”

          “Titans?”

          “Legendary pokegirl golems,” Steven explained. “You could call them the first artificial pokegirls, I suppose, but the legends around them are all quite vague. Some say they were all crafted by another legendary, some say they’re all legendaries in their own right, others name them all as aspects of a single legendary titan, one who was the sole shaper of the planet. Groudon and Kyogre provided the raw material that that titan formed.” He chuckled again and shook his head. “Still. Those are a curiosity. What’s important now is finding the primals before the cults can.”

          Nicholas nodded. “Agreed.”

          “I’ll get to it then.” Steven started to turn away. “Oh. And Nicholas?” Nicholas looked back but Steven hadn’t turned towards him. “I met… someone very interesting recently, after our talk in Mauville.” Now he looked back. “They recognized my pin instantly for what it is and asked me what I was doing, ‘giving that power to a son of hers’.” He smirked. “Somehow I got the feeling that they only cared that it was me who had done it.”

          “A… son of hers?” Nicholas swallowed. “Rayquaza…?”

          “No. It wasn’t Rayquaza. This person was referring to Rayquaza, not claiming to be her,” Steven clarified. “Just keep an eye out. If they were watching our conversation and knew where to find me afterwards they no doubt know that you’re headed to Fortree.”

          Nicholas nodded. “Understood. I’ll be careful. And, Steven?” Nicholas scratched his chin with a slight smirk when Steven rolled his eyes at the reversal. “The cults and everything about them, you said Lucy could be trusted with. But with this new power of mine I won’t be able to hide it for much longer even if I tried to.”

          “I’ll handle Lucy. You do what you have to.” Steven raised a hand before walking away, joining the team in their investigation.

          Nicholas took back to the road, waiting until the building was completely out of sight before stepping off and releasing Bea from her pokeball. “It’s time to talk.”

          Bea quickly took a respectful distance from him. “Yes Master.”

          “Here.” Nicholas tossed his belt to the surprised Metang before dropping to the ground. “At this point you all can see and hear outside of your pokeballs and even Aria has learned how to open hers. So I’ll leave it up to you and your Alpha. I’m about to discuss what I’ve been working on for the past week or so. Some of it’s going to be familiar for most of you, because Marin is the only one who wasn’t here for my conversation with the Stones in Rustboro. So…”

          He trailed off when the belt in Bea’s hands erupted with red light. His harem all materialized around him and it was Marin herself that spoke first. “So we can relax and sleep, is that it?” she asked. “Something happened back there. Things have been happening. Things have been changing since that last city. Mauville. Maybe it’s old news to all of them but it’s not to me and I can see that we’re all thinking the same thing.” Marin grinned. “We’re not going to sit around and watch while our tamer struggles.”

          Nicholas smiled down at his feet. “This isn’t really something I’m struggling with…”

          “Then tell that to Elaine,” came Bea’s curt reply.

          Nicholas slowly looked back up. The Blaziken was standing as she always did, closed off, almost hugging herself as she stared at him. “This is about me, isn’t it, Master?” she whispered.

          “n…” Nicholas started to deny it but the noise caught in his throat. After a few moments he swallowed. “I’m sorry, Elaine, but what I’m about to discuss is about more than just you. It’s about me, and forces stronger than any of us, and what I’ve realized about my own power. How it’s beyond you. Beyond any of you.” He looked to Aria and repeated himself. “Any of you.”

          Marin took a seat and sprawled out as the others did the same, even Lucy, who had appeared from behind the Sharpedo’s imposing figure. “We’re listening.”

          “In Rustboro I told the Stones how I am a human blessed by Ho-oh,” Nicholas began, watching Marin in particular as he spoke. She was the only one who hadn’t heard anything he was about to say before, besides Lucy, and he had his own theories on the Chansey. Especially after what Steven had just said. “I’m not sure if that really was made clear so let me say it again. I was born human. My lineage runs back to an ancient human clan called the Draconids, humans with greater innate power than others. They use that power to create harems of dragon pokegirls and, at least in ancient times, fight to maintain order in the world.” He thumped his chest. “That is who I was born as. A human that already had greater than usual energy. But that is not all I am now.” He tapped his eye socket. “These eyes of mine reveal something more. My body is infused with your power, too. Pokegirl power, primal energy, and it was gifted to me by Ho-oh, one of the legendary pokegirls. The concept of mega evolution that Steven described to me is the marriage of primal energy and origin energy in one body.” He lowered his hand and now looked at Bea. “For all of you, that concept may seem strange. A power you don’t understand, making you into something more.” His eyes flicked to Elaine. “Morgana has seen it in action. Elaine has experienced it. But the truth is, for years, the same thing has been occurring within my own body. As naturally as any of you form flames, water, wind, or bend wills with your minds, or break the very laws of physics,” he looked between each of the pokegirls as he listed their abilities, “my body naturally does something too. But, I’m human. So what kind of ability have I received?”

          “You did something in the building,” Bea murmured.

          “Not… consciously. Not yet.” Nicholas ran his hand over his face. “But yes, I did. That was the ‘something more’. I… I think I became, for a moment, like you are.”

          “Became like…?” the whispers began to rise as Nicholas returned to looking down at his feet. “Master, what do you mean?”

          Nicholas looked back up at Morgana. “When Ho-oh blessed me she recited a prophecy that I supposedly was fulfilling. One part of that spoke of how the human would ‘become as we are’. The prophecy was spoken between legendary pokegirls. That line meant that I, a human, would become something that resembled them. Whether that meant pokegirls or legendary pokegirls I didn’t know and neither did Ho-oh. But on that day I, a human, held my ground against her. I… ‘became like her’. I didn’t know how then. But after meeting with Steven, after receiving this,” Nicholas held up his hand to display the mega ring, “I’ve started looking at myself more closely. And that all led to what happened today.” He turned to Marin. “In a way I’m glad you’re the Water-type here, Marin. You won’t hesitate.”

          “She won’t hesitate to what, Master?” Bea asked but even as the words were leaving her mouth she felt cold. She knew exactly what.

          “Marin. Shoot me.”

          Bea was halfway to her feet but Marin, just as Nicholas had said, did not hesitate. The blast of water she fired at him drilled into Nicholas’ chest and for the second time that day Bea watched her Master die.

          And once again, light blazed. This time, however, what was happening was clear to see. As the water impacted flames exploded outwards to meet it and Marin’s attack was turned to harmless steam.

          Nicholas fought to control his breathing. If he’d been wrong… If it had been a fluke… Marin had seriously not hesitated to try and kill him.

          “S…So now you see,” he managed to get out. “At least defensively, Ho-oh’s power rises to protect me.”

          “You idiot, Master.” Nicholas blinked at where Bea half-stood. “You… you massive idiot.” Tears dripped from her cheeks as she dropped back to the ground. “What would you have done if that hadn’t worked twice?”

          “I… needed to prove it to myself too, Bea,” Nicholas explained quietly. “I needed to make sure I wasn’t wrong. Because I think what that prophecy meant, what the power Ho-oh gave to me is, is the ability to stand my ground. To match anything that comes my way, be it human, pokegirl, or legendary.”

          “What does that have to do with Elaine?” Bea asked. Nicholas could hear her growing angry and he could hardly blame her, not after the stunt he’d just pulled. “What does that have to do with the rest of us, Master? That ring of yours, all of the crap it’s brought.”

          “If Ho-oh’s power is my shield,” Nicholas replied, “the other side is my spear. That I can, and have, shown each of you at some point. What I wanted to explore today was the other side. Because,” he started to turn to Elaine before quickly moving on to where Aria sat, “ah, because I wanted you all to understand that it’s not just a human you’re comparing yourselves to.”

          A slight smile began to spread across Lucy’s face but she remained where she was, hidden behind Marin and Morgana as the others started clamoring. “Compare ourselves?” Bea spluttered. “Master WE are meant to be your shields. This power of yours should never have to be used!”

          “I don’t mean you, Bea. I mean the others. You’ve already figured this out, and it took us each a long time to get it right.” Nicholas leaned towards Aria. “You hate me, Aria. You hate me and you hate Bea because she is who I believe in. Isn’t that right.”

          Aria’s face began twitching. “N-No, Lord, I couldn’t…”

          “Morgana.” Nicholas turned. “You look at me and see someone who’s figured out all the answers, while you have none. Well it’s not true.” He turned away from her and looked at Elaine. “Elaine, for you especially I wanted to show this, because you are one of the questions I still haven’t answered. I wanted… I needed you to understand. Do you remember what you said during your mega evolution?”

          Elaine barely nodded. “I… of course I do, Master.”

          “You’re afraid of what you did,” Nicholas whispered. “I’ve felt it, Elaine. The process was only successful because deep down, below any conscious or unconscious part of our minds, we share a bond. In the days after our experiment I’ve protected that bond. I’ve held on tightly and felt every doubt you’ve felt. For a few seconds, you stood proud. And to you, that was the worst mistake you could have made.” He glanced away now and looked at Marin. “I wanted to show you this power because you believe the only way to be ‘mine’ is to be weak. To be nothing. Well then Elaine, ask yourself this.” When he looked back at her his eyes were hard. “If the only way I can be better than you is for you to be weaker than me, how weak do you believe I am?”

          Marin’s lips curled back. “This is a lesson you have already taught me. How is it not one she has learned?”

          “Because Elaine has survived her life by being weak,” Nicholas replied. “Not lived. Survived. Whenever she tried to be strong she was punished for it.”

          Marin’s sneer slowly dropped. “I… see.”

          “I will always be stronger than you, Elaine,” Nicholas said, shifting closer to the shaking Blaziken. “When you were in that form you felt the strongest you’ve ever been. I’m telling you that even then, I was in control. Just as you’ve always needed.”

          “…apple, Master,” Elaine choked.

          Nicholas slowly leaned back. “I will never punish you for being strong, Elaine. That is what I was trying to prove to you today. No matter how strong you become. I will never feel threatened and lash out.” He raised his hands slightly when Elaine curled up and turned back to the others. “You’re all comparing yourselves to me. Some of you are comparing yourselves to a human and feeling rage that you are so weak. Some… the opposite. Some believing that this human is perfect and feeling hopeless that you are not. I’m telling you, right here, right now, that the human you are all comparing yourselves to does not exist.” Nicholas rose. He poured every bit of power he could muster, every shred that he had discovered within him, into bolstering his aura with his own energy. And there was a lot of it. Rayquaza’s blood, his dragon’s blood, burned as it fed the oppressive blanket that smothered the watching pokegirls. “I am no ordinary human.” He locked eyes with Bea, and even she began shifting nervously at what she saw. “Stop treating me like one.”

          Aria was winging over the trees when she stiffened. Instantly she dropped, cutting through the canopy until she appeared above Nicholas and dropped to the ground, already on one knee with her head bowed. “Lord.”

          “What am I, Aria?”

          “You are my Lord,” Aria replied, her head still bowed. “And though I am unworthy of your grace, you are my Master.”

          “I am also your teacher,” Nicholas replied. “Walk with me. The others have been returned to their pokeballs.”

          Aria hesitated only a moment before standing. “Why, Lord?”

          “Because I wanted to be as alone as possible with my newest dragon,” Nicholas replied. “You’ve had a few days to think. I want to hear your answers to some of my questions.”

          Aria bowed and joined him on the road. “Yes, Lord.”

          “Do you remember what you swore in Lavaridge?” Nicholas waited for Aria to respond. “I said I want your answers, Aria, not your silence.”

          “…I do, Lord.”

          “Interesting. You remember, and yet you still acted the way you did. Tell me, Aria, if one of your subordinates so blatantly lied to you, how would you handle her?”

          Aria pressed her trembling hands between her breasts. “I… I would have killed her, Lord.”

          “You believe you, as the queen in that situation, would have the power to impose that will on another?” Nicholas asked. “Well then let’s ask the obvious, Aria. Do you believe I hold that power?”

          He heard Aria’s footsteps stop and turned to see her shaking in place. Well, that was the whole point of this conversation. He wanted to see if she could overcome herself just as Bea once had and take the first steps towards a stronger future.

          “Why am I not already dead, Lord?” Aria whispered.

          Nicholas smiled. “I have told you the answer already.”

          “Because you… are not me,” Aria said slowly. “Because you are so strong, you can afford mercy, while I… never could.”

          Nicholas’ smile widened. “Excellent. Come, Aria. Walk with me.”

          Eventually Aria forced her shaking knees to cooperate and she stumbled back to his side. Nicholas waited for her halting steps to smooth out before speaking again. “When we first met, Aria, you saw my strength. At the time, you came to the conclusion that if you were weaker than a human, you must be weak. It confused you, didn’t it?”

          “Yes, Lord.”

          “Then, you evolved. And you realized that you were strong all along. What did you think then, Aria?”

          “I thought… that it must have been a mistake, Lord,” Aria barely whispered. “That I had made a mistake, and so… so I…” Aria squeezed her eyes shut. “I wanted you Lord, I always did!”

          “Aria.” Aria jumped. “I did not ask for your excuses.”

          “Y-Yes, Lord,” Aria slowly opened her eyes. “I thought that, if I could take her spot, you would see the mistake.”

          “The mistake that you made, you mean,” Nicholas pointed out. “Usually you try to fix a mistake, not make more of them.”

          Aria moaned. “Lord…”

          “If it was up to Bea she’d be beating you daily just like I’m sure she already has been.” Aria flinched back. “Luckily for you, Aria, it is not up to her. And it is not up to you. I am in control here. I am Lord, I am Master, and I am your Weyrleader.” He turned to look at her. “That means your punishment is in my hands, and mine alone.”

          “I deserve nothing less than the worst punishment, Lord,” Aria whispered.

          “Did I not just say it is not in your hands, Aria?” Nicholas snapped. “You will have your punishment. I promise you that.”

          Aria waited, her body tensed, but Nicholas didn’t say another word. She remained braced for the entire time they were walking to Fortree.

          He was walking towards the pokecenter when he heard a feminine voice behind them. “Interesting. Only a Draconid could make his dragon feel such raw fear.”

          Nicholas turned to see what appeared to be a blue-haired boy approaching him. “And who are you?”

          The figure grinned. “Yes, nice eyes. You’re Nicholas Topolski, aren’t you.”

          Nicholas’ gaze traveled over the person’s face. Not only did he see eyes similar to his own but they were red, the edges pulled out to give their appearance an even more draconic feel. And that wasn’t even the end of it. Glowing lines spread from the outside corners and a few inches down their cheeks, forming patterns of scales along with obvious fangs within the grinning mouth below. “And who are you?”

          “A cousin of sorts,” the figure replied. “Name’s Tio.”

          “You must be the ‘interesting person’ Steven Stone said was looking for me,” Nicholas replied. “Well? What do you want?” He surreptitiously moved his hand to his pokedex and activated the scanner.

          “I want a lot of things, Draconid,” Tio replied, “but for today I’ll settle with judging your worth.” They hummed, cocking their head as they looked at Nicholas. “Well. You’re not bad, I suppose, for a Draconid. More like what you used to be.”

          “And what does that mean?” Nicholas asked. Kalmiya whispered in his ear and his mouth thinned. “You’re a Draconid too, aren’t you?”

          Tio began laughing. “Hardly. I do not draw power from her Lady Rayquaza, but rather from her creator.”

          Nicholas’ eyes widened. “You’re a descendant of the original dragon?”

          “Descendant of…? Well I suppose, in a way,” Tio mused. “I’m surprised you even know of her, even if you did not call her by name. I thought Draconids believed only their Mistress existed.”

          “I’m not like the current Draconid clan who live in the region,” Nicholas replied. “I had a good teacher.”

          “Perhaps you did.” Tio seemed to be looking at Nicholas with new eyes before turning away. “I’d like to meet again someday, Nicholas Topolski. Wield that ring well, pitiful as it may be.”

          Nicholas watched Tio vanish behind some nearby houses before letting out a sigh. “You’re sure they were human, Kalmiya?”

          “I did not say that, Master,” Kalmiya corrected gently. “I said the scan matched no known pokegirl DNA.”

          “And that means…?”

          “The pokedex does not have ‘human’ as a scan result,” Kalmiya replied. “It only can identify pokegirls. They returned a negative result.”

          “Well that’s annoying. I know for a fact that certain pokegirls aren’t known to human science so a negative result means nothing to me.” Nicholas shrugged and turned back towards the pokecenter. “Whatever. We’re finally in Fortree, so I’m going to ignore that mystery and focus on the gym.”

          Morgana stirred. After a few moments she pushed herself upright, peering down at the empty space between herself and the others occupying their hotel bed.

          Nicholas lowered his hand when he heard the door to the balcony slide open and he turned to see Morgana stepping outside with him. The moonlight shone off her body, gleaming from the small amount of red that could be seen in her cleavage as the nude Gardevoir approached her tamer.

          “Sorry. I woke you, didn’t I,” Nicholas apologized. “I couldn’t sleep so I started practicing.”

          “I’m not sure why I woke up, Master,” Morgana admitted.

          “Because I did this.” Nicholas raised his hand again, curling his fingers back before his aura swirled down his arm. As it did Morgana felt something in her psyche twinge in response. “Elaine’s been avoiding me ever since that weather outpost or I’m sure she’d be awake right now too.”

          Morgana found a chair and pulled it next to where Nicholas stood. “Since the outpost.” Morgana smiled slightly. “You certainly made things clear there, Master.”

          “This woke you because I’m practicing my control of my energy,” Nicholas explained. “You and Elaine. You two have fully formed bonds with me. As long as you’re open, you’d feel when I did this.”

          “And?” Morgana cocked her head. “Should I prepare myself, Master?”

          “Are you ready?”

          Morgana’s eyes wandered. “Well… I still have questions, Master. But before, I believed I needed the answers first.” She brought her gaze back to him. “I have since realized that neither of us will ever have all of the answers. Elaine… found some of hers by giving herself to you in that way. I’m a little afraid of what will happen to me, but I know I can trust you, Master.” She sighed. “Even if you can be so embarrassing sometimes.”

          Nicholas gave her a cheeky grin. “There’s a nude, statuesque Gardevoir sitting next to me without shame or fear. I’m proud of you, Morgana. If that pride embarrasses you, well, then I’ll enjoy your embarrassment too.”

          “Pervert.”

          “Takes one to know one, Morgana.” Nicholas snickered. “Though I will admit that I’ve grown much more comfortable with all things pokegirl. A bit of a side effect from the source of my power, I believe.”

          Morgana raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”

          “Rayquaza’s blood seems to burn hotter in two scenarios. When I’m in battle… and when I’m in bed,” Nicholas purred.

          Morgana giggled and raised a hand to take his. “Of course it does, Master.”

          “It’s getting a bit-“ Nicholas was bringing his other hand around, intending on playing with Morgana and aiming her back inside, when he heard a low, mournful howl echoing through the trees around them.

          Morgana got to her feet. “What was that, Master?”

          “I have no idea.” Nicholas looked around. Half the city was up in the trees themselves and with so many potential vantage points he began to feel uneasy. Something could be watching them from anywhere. “We’re in the middle of the forest. Probably a feral.”

          “We should head- inside,” Morgana said, her words punctuated by another howl. This one had been much closer. “Master.”

          Nicholas resisted when she tugged on his hand. “Hold on just a second. You’re an empath, aren’t you? You’d feel if something was getting close.”

          “Well… yes, Master,” Morgana replied.

          “That sounds…” Nicholas listened as the howl echoed once again. “That doesn’t sound like a pokegirl on the hunt. It sounds… lost, maybe.”

          “It could easily be a trick.” Morgana tapped her own chest. “You should know, Master. Not all pokegirls are what they appear to be.”

          Nicholas turned and pulled her down to give a gentle kiss. “Everything you are is beautiful, Morgana.”

          Morgana blushed. “Master…”

          “Still, point taken.” Nicholas turned back to the city to give it one last look before heading inside. “It could easily be a feral pokegirl trying to lure out… prey…” He stared down at the main roads. A figure, cloaked in shadow, was walking past. Another howl echoed as the figure opened its mouth and when it passed into a patch of moonlight light shone from the pure white hair covering its body.

          “Morgana? Is she feral?” Nicholas asked, pointing down at the walking pokegirl. He could see additional movement behind the girl which he identified as a curved black tail when she stepped into another patch of moonlight. “She’s naked, but that doesn’t mean anything.”

          “She…” Morgana stared down at the walking pokegirl. “I don’t understand, Master.” She turned to him. “It’s as if she isn’t there. No… it’s less than that. When I try to feel her there is nothing.”

          “Dark-type. I could guess from her skin and the fact that she seems to be at home in the night,” Nicholas mused. “Interesting. My pokedex is inside or I’d try to get a scan on her.” Nicholas pondered the walking figure. The pokegirl was past their hotel now. “I wonder why a feral is walking through a human city in the middle of the night.”

          Morgana sighed. Her Master was not a Dark-type. She knew what he was thinking. “If you don’t hurry, Master, you won’t be able to ask her.”

          “Grab some of my pokeballs, just in case?” Nicholas asked, slipping back into the room and grabbing some pants. He couldn’t find his shirt so he abandoned it and headed to the door, juggling his pokedex as Morgana joined him with a handful of orbs in her hands. “Thanks.” Nicholas dropped the pokeballs in his pockets before pulling the door open and hurrying down the stairs with Morgana just behind him.

          The pokegirl was out of sight by the time he got onto the street but her howls were easy to follow and he jogged in the direction he’d seen her walking. After only a minute he saw the pokegirl come back into view. He was getting closer when he realized why this pokegirl seemed familiar.

          “She’s an Absol!” Nicholas exclaimed. “The skin color, the white hair. She’s the same as Abby, from Rustboro.”

          “What’s she doing, Master?” Morgana asked curiously.

          “Let’s see what the pokedex has to say.” Nicholas pulled up his pokedex and read the entry Kalmiya fed him. “Hmm… Absol, the… ‘Disaster Pokegirl’? It says here that they’re often seen just before natural disasters… Ah, I see.” Nicholas lowered his pokedex. “She’s trying to warn the city.”

          “Warn it? About what?” Morgana asked in surprise.

          “Well whatever she’s howling about I’d assume,” Nicholas replied as the Absol let out another eerie call. “The pokedex says that they’re sensitive to subtle changes in the environment.” He looked thoughtful as he contemplated the walking feral. “I wonder… Could she be sensing what’s to come? Groudon, Kyogre. Could one of them be stirring and causing this Absol distress?”

          “You followed her because you wanted to ask her why she was here, didn’t you, Master?” Morgana asked, walking in front of him as her dress flowed over her naked body.

          “You’re entering battle mode, I see.” Nicholas nodded and the two began closing on the Absol. “I need to know what she’s sensing. If it’s the primals, she could lead us to the cults.”

          The moment Morgana interpreted his words as permission to attack the Absol in front of her twisted around. Morgana ground to a halt when she saw the pair of intense red eyes lock on her even though she and the feral were at least a hundred feet from each other. With a nervous chuckle she raised her hands, building power as she licked suddenly dry lips. “She’s got an advantage on me, Master. She can sense my intent, and I can sense nothing.”

          “Then give me a moment.” Nicholas took a few steps in front of Morgana and raised his voice. “Hello! I heard your warning. I, too, know what’s coming. I want to stop it. Will you help me?”

          The Absol made absolutely no move to acknowledge him, remaining entirely focused on Morgana. Nicholas walked forwards a bit more and tried again but frowned when the feral still did nothing. “Morgana, stay right there a moment.”

          Nicholas approached the Absol, watching carefully for any sign of hostility. Receiving none he walked all the way up to her and came to a halt barely a foot away. “Hello? I’m Nicholas, a Draconid. I’m here to protect this region.”

          “Master, please step back,” Morgana begged.

          “She’s feral. And she’s focused on you, because you want to fight her.” Nicholas peered at the Absol’s face. She didn’t even blink when he got close. “On the other hand, I want to talk to her.” He let his eyes run over the sharp bladed horn and tail the Absol had before shrugging. He’d tested a pokegirl’s energy attack, why not a physical one?

          Knowing what had happened with Morgana the instant Nicholas let the thought of restraining the Absol cross his mind he was acting on it. And sure enough, almost exactly at the same moment his hand shot towards the Absol’s arm, the girl was reacting to his presence.

          Nicholas grabbed the girl’s upper arm and held on tight, yanking her back when she tried to jump away. He’d intended to let her try and attack him but when the girl jerked back and her head began whipping around, her horn whistling as it came for his neck, Nicholas couldn’t help but let go and throw his arms up in a panic.

          He felt the impact and quickly tried to grab the Absol again but once he’d let go of her the feral had scampered away. He could hear Morgana running up behind him and dove again, cursing when the Absol danced away from his hands and turned to flee.

          “She’s not here to fight! Be gentle!” Nicholas yelled, falling back and inspecting his arms. He could see a red line crossing both of his forearms where the Absol had struck but once again, he was unharmed.

          “She’s getting away!” Morgana tried to run. But she wasn’t fast enough to catch up to the sprinting Absol. Another few seconds and she’d be able to duck behind a building and get away.

          Morgana hissed. She needed to be THERE, not HERE!

          With a pop Morgana vanished. The Absol scrambled, diving to the side when the massive Gardevoir appeared in front of her. Taking only a split second to understand what she had just done Morgana dashed forwards, building energy before throwing it to explode in the dirt in front of the Absol. She did that twice more, keeping the feral from being able to pick up any speed, while Nicholas caught up and formed a second wall to keep the Absol corralled. As he sealed off her major escape route Nicholas saw something change in the Absol’s expression. Until now it had been calm, almost gentle. The moment he arrived and cornered her the girl’s lips curled back in a snarl.

          Now it was Nicholas’ turn to react to a foreseen attack as he dodged backwards, losing his footing and rolling away as the road he had just been standing on exploded. The girl tried to press her advantage, the dark energy she had just fired from her horn still flowing, but she let loose a frustrated scream when Morgana appeared in front of her again. This time the Gardevoir aimed AT her opponent, smashing her with her hard energy attack and sending the Absol tumbling across the ground. “Master!”

          “I’m fine. Get her!” Nicholas got back to his feet and took in the two pokegirls. Morgana was in front of him, now, and that left a path open for the Absol to take. But she’d flipped her switch and now she was more focused on battling than running. “Before she can recover. Atta-!”

          Morgana was bringing her hands forwards again when a shadow flashed at her waist. Nicholas’ eyes widened as he watched Morgana cough, part of her dress falling down her body, nearly cut in two.

          Morgana crumpled to one knee as blood began pouring from her side and the Absol stalked forwards, shadowy blades forming and dissipating across her body as she cautiously looked for another opening.

          Nicholas took a few steps backwards while he watched Morgana struggle. This feral was strong. They’d only been worried about chasing her down and hadn’t stopped to consider that they might be outmatched.

          …because you can afford to be…

          Nicholas winced as Aria’s words echoed in his ears. He hadn’t expected his lesson to be thrown back in his face so soon.

          “Master!”

          Nicholas dragged himself back to reality. Morgana’s head was still holding high, her defiance the only thing keeping the Absol wary at this point. “Morgana? Don’t worry, I’ll recall you.”

          “No. No, Master.” One of Morgana’s hands was busy keeping her propped up, the other pressed to her side. It was barely helping to slow the flow of blood. “Together, we can bring her down.”

          It took Nicholas longer than he wanted to admit to understand what she was saying. “Morgana, we don’t have to force this. You weren’t ready before.”

          “I was afraid before,” Morgana corrected. “I was afraid… of disappointing you. Of not being- of not being perfect, for my Master.” Nicholas straightened up as he felt her bolster his confidence. “I’m not afraid anymore.”

          Nicholas nodded. The Absol was closing in now, seeming to understand that Morgana was disabled. “This is the first time I’ve tried this in battle.” He raised his hand and the energy burst forth, immediately suffusing him in sparkling light. “I’ll hold it as long as I can.”

          “There’s a reason you woke me tonight, Master,” Morgana replied with a laugh. “I love Elaine. But she does not share what we do.”

          The Absol stumbled back when Morgana’s body exploded with light. Pulsing from her necklace energy flowed in waves as Morgana’s body was wrapped in power. The remains of her dress vanished as Morgana lost concentration on the technique forming it and as the energy continued pulsing the red structure between her breasts began to shine through.

          The orb of light that Nicholas had come to know as the signature for mega evolution blew apart without any of the energy Elaine’s evolution had contained. And as he stared at Morgana she appeared nearly unchanged. Naked, of course, but she didn’t wear anything in the first place. He did notice that her wound was gone, and as Morgana stood he saw that the fur covering her ears had become much more ornate, branching out in multiple distinct spikes.

          The Absol snarled, hesitating as she skipped forwards, before finally steeling her resolve and lunging at the Gardevoir with a roar. Nicholas flinched backwards, but all he had to do was blink and she was gone.

          “You will not touch my Master,” Morgana said calmly, and now Nicholas noticed the twisted body of the Absol crumpled against a nearby wall. The feral let out a barely perceptible moan, her muscles twitching as she tried to move, but whatever Morgana had done in that instant had broken her completely. A pokeball pulled itself from his pocket and launched through the air, striking the Absol squarely and sucking her into the capture beam. The ball chimed nearly instantly and Nicholas caught it when it arced through the air back into his hands.

          “Steven said the power you’d receive was on a completely different level and I can see that he was right,” Nicholas said quietly, waiting as Morgana turned towards him. “You were struggling with that Absol a moment ago.”

          “Master was worried about me?” Morgana purred. Nicholas watched her sashay forwards. There really wasn’t much physically different about her. The only thing he could see now that she was turned towards him was that the structure on her chest, what her horns had become, had grown, wrapping under her breasts and giving the appearance that Morgana was wearing a brilliant shiny red bra. But as she continued forwards he saw her dress begin to form, hiding the change as Morgana covered herself in her preferred look. And… covered. And covered. Nicholas watched as the dress hit the ground and continued expanding, swelling into a massive black gown that trailed behind Morgana for at least a few feet. Her gloves, too, expanded as she formed them on her hands, stretching all the way up to her elbow and continuing even beyond that to form long points that rested against her upper arm.

          “I was. Of course I was. You were bleeding out.” Nicholas let out his breath when Morgana bent over him. Her lips were twisted ever so slightly in a teasing smile and her eyes were soft as they gazed straight through him. “I see Elaine wasn’t the only one to find herself through her mega evolution.”

          Morgana’s hair tickled his nose as she raised her hands, one caressing her own cheek, capturing a few strands of her hair and giving her head a light tilt, while the other trailed down the side of Nicholas' face, ending with just two of her fingers under his chin while the others curled back. “I will never let anything harm you, Master,” Morgana breathed, a light blush beginning to appear across her face when she inched even closer and the teasing smile relaxed, turning into something much more possessive as her lips parted. “My Master.”

          Nicholas released his hold on the energy and let it bleed away, trembling as he felt his dick straining against the fabric of his shorts. The Morgana he knew wasn’t sex incarnate. Not when compared to what she had become after mega evolving.

          He had no idea what would happen if he tried to tame one of his pokegirls while they were in that form and if he had delayed much longer he would probably have found out. He had felt raw, unfiltered lust from the Gardevoir, somewhat like what she had exhibited after her evolution but much more intense. Now, though, as her body burned off the last of his energy and her appearance returned to normal, nude once again, he allowed himself to give in to some of the urges the mega Gardevoir had drawn out of him. Urges that he could give in to because this time, the transformation had barely bothered him. He was getting stronger.

          Morgana gasped when she felt Nicholas press into her chest. She remained bowed, letting him massage her for a while, before Nicholas realized that the airflow and quiet noises of the outside world had disappeared. He pulled back to see the inside of their hotel room and with a chuckle he guided Morgana down to the floor. “You’re teleporting. That’s incredible, Morgana. And you don’t need my power to do it.”

          Morgana gasped when he began sucking on her breasts, alternating between them while continuing the massage he had begun outside. “I… can do it, because of you, Master.”

          “Yes, yes. Just take the compliment, Morgana.” Nicholas sat up and smiled down at her. “I’m okay with having you like this, by the way. The predatory Morgana who came out during the mega evolution, she’s nice too. But this Morgana,” he reached back to slide a few fingers between Morgana’s folds, receiving a throaty moan in response, “this is the Morgana I know.”
